August 24, 2017 (SPUC) All too often, parents are pressured by doctors to undergo genetic screening, and even to abort their babies if it is thought they have a disability. Now a video where an actress hilariously relates how she resisted this pressure is going viral.
When actress Lynn Fergusson (most famous for voicing Mac in Chicken Run) became pregnant with her first child at the age of 37, she was surprised to find that her pregnancy was labeled "geriatric." However, she was even more surprised by the relentless pressure doctors put on her first to undergo an amniocentesis, and then to abort her baby. Her talk, published by storytelling website The Moth, is related with humor, and is a beautiful example of a mother determined to do the best for her son.
The pressure begins
From the beginning, Fergusson was determined not to have the amniocentesis, which carries a 1 percent risk of miscarriage. "Its not technically the babys fault that Im old, you know," she said. "So Im not gonna take a risk. Not unless theres a good reason."(snip)
But the doctors continued to push, first because they suspected Down's syndrome, and then, terrifyingly, Edwards' syndrome, a condition where most babies die in the womb, or shortly after birth. Her response was amazing:
"You know, we had so many scans," said Ferguson. "I had seen my son. Id seen his heart. Id seen the inside of his eyes. (snip) He was my son and he needed me. He depended on me to make the right decision. So I said, No.'"

You’re on the wrong thread. This isn’t the “men who hate women thread”. That was yesterday.
Many of those women have very short hair because of chemotherapy. No need to tell them it's not cute.
she looks good to me
Good eye. She’s 52. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0272521/
Do they practice sharia where you live?
Are you offended I presume a husband should be consulted before his wife cuts her hair short? Just asking bc I don’t know where the sharia comment came from.
Thanks jiggy
About a month before I was born my parents were informed that something was wrong. The doctors wanted to abort. My Father thought it would be OK because they could have another baby. My Mother said NO! She went through with it and I was 75 years old in July!
You can thank the lawyers for that. You hear the ads all the time.
So what ended up happening with the boy she courageously birthed? Anyone?
She said he’s 11 years old now. And she said he is perfect, some of the time.
Big smile on my face reading this! Praise God for your Mother’s loving decision, and God’s protection on you.
Great. Normal kid, then.
Thanks for the reply.
Same here. I was labeled “elderly” by the time I was 36. My healthy, nearly 10-lb offspring now has a doctorate.
If everyone pregnant could hear her beautiful, loving response, “He was my son and he needed me.”
Many women cut their hair short after having been reduced to a sex symbol, underestimated at work and sexually harrassed one time too many.
LOLs! For pity's sake, don't ping Miss M!
I love miss m!
She’s 52 and married to a man. Odd, her wiki page doesn’t list or have one word about her son.
