In the Northeast they can tell you’re not from the area if you ask for a slice of ‘cheese pizza’. It’s just a slice of ‘pizza’, or ‘plain pizza’ at most. To them, it’s asking for ‘cheese pizza’ is no different than asking for ‘bread pizza’ or ‘tomato-sauce pizza’.

Perfect! I am celebrating the graduation of my latest college degree today and pizza is my favorite food! (OK, steak, etc. are definitely also my favorite foods, but pizza tops the list.)

I'm from the northeast (New Haven Coutny, Connecticut), and a plain apizza in New Haven can mean crust, sauce, and a sprinkling of parmesan (no mozzerella). So yes, if you are going to the top parlours, asking for a cheese (a)pizza is not redundant.
