A 28-year-old North Carolina man is facing a murder charge after allegedly stabbing his wife in bed — but the newlywed claims he doesn’t remember carrying out the alleged crime because he might have done it in his sleep, PEOPLE confirms.
Matthew Phelps, of Raleigh, called police distraught early Friday morning, declaring that his wife, Lauren, was dead on their bedroom floor covered in blood.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor,” he says in a 911 call obtained by PEOPLE. “I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it. I can’t believe this.”
He told the dispatcher through tears that his wife wasn’t breathing and that he was afraid to get close to her — “I’m so scared,” he said.
Phelps is charged with murder and is being held at Wake County Detention Center without bail, a jail spokesperson tells PEOPLE. As police work to determine the circumstances around Lauren’s death, Phelps suggested during the 911 call that cold medicine he took the night before might have led to his alleged actions.

When my daughter takes that and other sleep aids she does all kind of weird things like walking in her sleep, trying to cook, etc. She has woken up outside a lot of times or in the morning with grass and dirt in the bed from being outside barefoot. She never remembers doing any of it.
I have personally known of several cases where people did things including driving their car and remembered nothing when on Ambian.

Several years ago I worked ambulance. We were paid once a year. When I got my check, I went to my boss to tell her I thought I was over paid. She opened up the file cabinet to show me the cases I’d worked and I was shocked. MY signiture was on all those records and I had zero memory of all but a few. I did cpr in my sleep! It’s a darned good thing I was good at my job, and that none of those cases ever had to go to trial. Most of those cases took place during the night when I was asleep.

Took a prescribed sleep medicine many years ago. Right after I took it I headed straight up the stairs to the bedroom. Didn’t make it I kept walking Straight Ahead into the guest bathroom, the wall at the far end, and fell into the bathtub.
I didn’t remember a thing, but my wife never let me take those pills again.

I can empathize. At breakfast this morning, I meant to ask my wife to pass the salt, but what came out was, “You bitch! You’ve ruined my life!”
