The brilliant indoor benefits of LED grow lights
The Guardian ^ | September 3, 2017 | James Wong

As a self-confessed science geek I am fascinated by technology. Yet in the world of gardening this is often synonymous with the gimmicky (fiberglass meerkat solar light, anyone?) or the hugely complex and costly – think hydroponic growers that require a degree in electrical engineering to install. So it was with trepidation that I started experimenting with LED grow lights last winter in my tiny flat.

Nine months down the line I am a total convert, eulogizing about them to all my gardening mates. They are something I feel could be a gamechanger to many modern gardeners, if we could only get over our preconceptions. This is why…

Once upon a time grow lamps were massive, ungainly things – fluorescent tubes more than a meter long that required complex and hideous systems of stands, cables and reflectors. They were real power guzzlers, too, so not exactly great for the planet, or your wallet – which would already have taken a pretty eye-watering hit from the price of all the kit. They even kicked out quite a bit of heat, which apart from raising safety issues, could also damage the very plants you were trying to grow.

However, recent breakthroughs in LED technology have created a new generation of effective, cool-running grow lights that cost a fraction of the old-school behemoths both to buy and to run, consuming (according to some manufacturers) 90% less energy. Crucially, they have shrunk down enough to be easily incorporated into average living room decor, some seamlessly integrated into planter-cum-lamp designs.

Others are light and thin enough to be fixed pretty much invisibly into standard flat-pack shelves, turning existing pieces of furniture in my house into instant growing units. These LED lights are becoming increasingly widely available online and even at a certain Scandinavian home store.

“Federal judge: Drinking tea, shopping at a gardening store is probable cause”

Popped up straightway while trying to find the gardening thread on hot peppers. Reminicient of MN State Troopers staking out Wisconsin fireworks stores, but without the SWAT raid.

If you dry the peppers or turn them into sauces you can control the heat and keep the flavor.

Interesting ,,, you have any good recipes ?

I'm fermenting,5-gal., Ghost,Habinero,Jalapino, Carolina,Tabasco and green Bell peppers now for a sauce . We do a lot of dried Bell and hot peppers ,herbs and green onions ,,,thanks

I grew Tabasco peppers. They are plenty hot yet retain flavor.

I make my own Tabasco sauce. Love that stuff and it's so simple to make. I have a jar of peppers sitting in apple cider vinegar waiting for when I need the next batch. Of all the hot sauces I make it's what I use the most.

Grew some Jigsaws last summer. 3ish million SCU.

Mine are loaded.

If either of you ever have some extra seeds send me a PM with your address and I'll send you money for postage. Superhots are virtually unheard of in Spain as the locals don't go for spicy foods.

There is a Facebook group called Hot Pepper Growing Society that has amateur and commercial growers from around the world. They have hundreds of posts on fermented peppers and recipes for them. I haven't tried fermenting yet. I use the old fashioned vinegar method. That's actually the site where I first read about LED grow lamps before I posted it here.

I replaced all the incandescent bulbs in our home with Walmart brand LEDs that were on sale at 50% off. We then had to replace our AC unit when the 30 year old beast died. The combination of low energy bulbs and more efficient AC dropped our summer time power bill by 40-50%!! Living in the heat of south Florida, that is a big deal.

BEWARE! There is an ornamental pepper named 'Jigsaw', as well. The TRUE name of the pepper we are talking about is 'Fatalii Gourmet Jigsaw'...read about it here.

If still interested, let us know. :-)

Portugal decriminalized drug use years ago when they had a terrible junkie issue. All the money used on incarceration went to treatment instead for those that wanted it. They now have a fraction of the usage. Sometimes things can be counterintuitive.

...so we can use that money to pay welfare to people ...

So they can shop at Walmart. Simple. Oh and pay Hillary Clinton to be a board member. And let us not for get to say that the biggest beneficiary of welfare is Walmart.

You forgot to mention that our purchases at these stores are also fueling China’s massive military modernization program. Well, somebody has to pay for all those new jets, tanks, warships, and ship-killer ballistic missiles.

Turns out it is us, the intended targets.

How karmic is that? Talk about chickens coming home to roost.
