I remember her as some slut who was whoring around with the press in tow. Shaming her son’s and the Royal Family in the process. Am I missing anything?
I remember that it overshadowed Mother Theresa’s death.
This is so cultish it is creepy. She means nothing.
I’m getting real tired of her canonization by the press . . . enough already
I mark this day as a milepost in the decline of Western Civilization in which Diana died a celebrity martyr, worshipped in death by millions for little more than her status as a celebrity. I know this is heresy to many, but I do not think she was a great, or even a particularly good person, joining her feckless husband in marital infidelity and not such a saint in the rest of her private life, either. Compare the global mourning for her and that for Mother Theresa, a woman who really dedicated her life to good works at supreme personal sacrifice.
I just checked my Givadam meter. It’s still at zero.
When I hear Princes Diana, I immediately think People Magazine, which I never read.
I wish they would just let her die already.
She was Britney Spears with rich parents.
Flitting from one wealthy guy to the next.
She made photo-op charity a moderate priority to shield her from some of the scorn that promiscuous people without a full time public relations firm recieve.
I haven’t forgotten for a moment who she actually was without the smoke and mirrors.
After WWI a lot of those monarchs were gone, and those remaining had to find a way to justify their existence.
The UK eventually figured out that a media-friendly royal family full of celebrities would help the monarch remain somewhat relevant. This worked OK for young Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, and others. Diana was the next generation of glamour and she took it to an even higher level of celebrity.
And then the dark side of the cult of celebrity appeared.
Hollywood can do this better. Lyndsay Lohan is great — until she self-destructs. Shia LaBoeuf is great — until he self-destructs. These people are interchangeable. They have their 15 minutes of fame and then someone else is on the cover of People Magazine.
It's different for the Royal Family. You're kind of in there for life, and that can prove embarrassing if the chosen celebrity self-destructs. In the end, I'm pretty sure that everyone in the British upper class (except her children) was relieved that she had an accident.
The Bodyguard was ex-SAS.
20 years after the crash in the middle of a messy divorce his soon-to-be ex-wife stated that her husband had told her that Diana had been killed:
She was carrying the muzzie playbook Dodi’s child.
there would be a (sort of) Queen of England with a Muslim child and that was (and should be) unacceptable.
In their defense I don’t believe any of them really wanted to kill her.
And I never found her attractive at all. She looked to me like one of her sons dressed up like a woman.
I remember my reaction at the time was shock. I said to my British husband (who could not have cared less) that I realized people died in car crashes, but not usually people like her. Diana was a young, naive brood mare for the heir and the spare. I believe she was actually in love with Charles, but found out about his mistress before the wedding. She didn’t feel she could cancel the wedding and extracted a promise that the physical relationship was over. He lied. She didn’t see any way out and started having affairs of her own. What a mess that marriage was! What a mess her life was! No, Diana wasn’t blameless and Diana was really manipulative. I have always had respect for the Queen, who has tried her best to keep dignity in the monarchy. Charles is a prig. I know he will be King, as long as he outlasts his mother. But thankfully his tenure should be short. I think the biggest misfortune in the whole mess is the fact that those two young guys lost their mother as such early ages. They seem to be pretty good people. I look forward to seeing William and Kate in the palace.
She did lots of living.
I wasn’t a fan, but no child deserves to see their mother beat up like that woman was. No one could take that pressure.
I remember the event well and was glued to cable news for hours with live coverage. It was the best live TV I experienced since the O.J. freeway jam several years before. By the next morning I concluded that she had been killed and that the Brit services were the likely parties. Of course back then it was a bit early to connect the moslem angle to motive but in retrospect, I think the Royals felt it had to be done. I do wonder what happened to the Merc 500 they died in. At least O.J.’s Bronco is still road worthy. It would be fascinating to see them both auctioned at Barrett-Jackson or Mecum’s or some such to see which would bring more.
She was a lovely, stylish lady. Too bad she got tangled up with the world’s most dysfunctional family, the Windsors.
