Asked how she could debase herself to the level of playing Mammy in Gone with the Wind, Hattie McDaniel replied, Id rather play the maid and make $700 a week than be a maid and make $7. Now McDaniels iconic performance, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first and only black winner in that category until 1990, stands under threat of being erased from the cultural memory. A Memphis theater that screens Gone with the Wind annually announced that it is withdrawing it from future showings. At this moment that decision may look like a trivial detail from the silly-season panic attached to all art works with historically uncomfortable connotations, but Ill wager its just the beginning of what figures to be a devastating war on this film. I expect Gone with the Wind will disappear from sight within a few years.

The “Al Jolson Story” was an excellent movie that was always shown on TV during the holiday season because of Jolson’s Jewish background. The movie, which had some excellent music, accurately depicted the Jolson character in blackface. Because of that, it became unacceptable, and I have not seen it in the past 40 years.
I saw it on TCM a few years ago.
“Gone With the Wind” is one of my desert island DVDs.
There is another “pretty world” that’s fixin’ to take its “last bow” - ours.
Max Steiner's use of music was brilliant in this devastating scene.
“I cannot believe we are going to ban books and movies in the United States of America - the land of freedom of press.
AA will regret losing their history. No proof of what happened to their ancestors”
Gone with the wind and song of the south in jeopardy thanks to a minute number of scum and equally scummy politicians who cave. Like the flags and statues.
GWTW part of Ted Turner’s Pride and Joy movie collection he owned. He loved his movie collection. We stayed in the the Omni on many trips to Atlanta in the 80’s-90’s and they had 2 screens (free to guests) and GWTW played daily.
Outstanding cinematography, particularly considering there is no CGI. It was all actors, props, and real staging. An amazing scene and a work of art. I can’t believe we, as a society, are going to let the leftists ban such things. If so, then maybe we’re no longer a society worth defending.
I wonder when TMC will stop playing the movie?
They do not play Holiday Inn (1942) but the follow up less entertaining ‘White Christmas’ due to a bit in the movie with blackface which was used to hide the gal that Fred Astaire was after. I think I saw it after midnight once. I bought the film so I could watch it during the Christmas season.
I saw “Holiday Inn” on TCM a few years ago.
I love Gone With the Wind. Vivian Lee’s performance was incredible. She changes so much throughout the film that by the end she no longer even resembles the Southern belle she was at the beginning. And you, miss, are no lady. Magnificent film. I can’t believe this is happening.
