Tens of thousands have braved massive traffic jams to get to a remote stretch of Nevada desert for the annual Burning Man festival.

The highly-anticipated art and music festival runs over nine days from Sunday until September 4 in Black Rock Desert, which is about 120 miles north of Reno.

Black Rock City has been transformed into a 'metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression and self-reliance' where about 70,000 people have descended upon.

In a matter of days, volunteers for the event built what is likely to be the state's busiest airport in the middle of an ancient dry lake-bed.

The airport, formally known as 88NV, is built every year and averages as many as 800 takeoffs and landings a day before it's taken down completely at the end of the event.

Yup. The burners are out of town but they'll be back starting next weekend. For an event that celebrates burning "THE MAN" and eschewing capitalism be tryng to be "cashless" at the event. nobody finds it odd that silly cone valley execs appear, fly in, have million dollar travel busses etc. Not only that, someone was trying to sell 3 passes and 3 parking permits the other day for face value of $4,500. And we wonder why there are some many burners with signs after the event looking for money or rides to get back to where the came from. Burn baby burn. I suppose we'll see a report on "celebrity" sightings later in the week. Groovy man........

Burning Man sounds like fun.

Always wished I had gone when I was younger.

I hope they all have a good time.

But, at those prices, even for the cheap tickets (of which there aren’t many), someone is makin’ some money after expenses. HUH? Oh, advertising and such? Fees to BLM? Fees to the county? Fees to LEO? Just as long as nobody get too damaged physically.

It’s about radical self expression (unless your expression offends a Leftist, then it’s banned).

It’s what they do. Lucky for them the playa dried out after the wet winter here. A couple months ago there was 9 inches of standing water out there.

It takes a lot of capital to be an anti-capitalist.

I used to go every year to meet with folks in tech and engineering. We would have talks, workshops and demos. Lots of blasts, lasers, music and vehicles intertwined with the most adventurous people on Earth.

Burning Man is about trying new things with as few nanny state rules
and lawyers as possible. While fully respecting your neighbors. It was once an atmosphere of so much respect that I didn’t see a single scrap of trash or verbal altercation. I walked barefoot the entire time.

Yes, the EDM/Raver crowd has recently taken over and polluted the place. With trash and commercial camps. Us old timers keep in touch and will be back as soon as it’s not “cool” anymore
