Last week, when Ed Skrein was excited to announce that he would be playing the character of Major Ben Daimio in the upcoming Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. In the comics, the character is of Asian heritage and there was an immediate backlash from the APA community. Today, Skrein took to Twitter responding to the public outcry saying, I must do what I feel is right and announced that he would be stepping down from the role.
Hellboy producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin and Lionsgate & Millennium made a statement to Deadline saying, Ed came to us and felt very strongly about this. We fully support his unselfish decision. It was not our intent to be insensitive to issues of authenticity and ethnicity, and we will look to recast the part with an actor more consistent with the character in the source material.
Read Skreins full statement below.

Or casting Emma Stone as Allison Ng, a Chinese/Hawaiian, in “Aloha.”
>>Sheesh, I misspelled ‘fjord.’ My pubic education is showing.<<
Next time think “Fjord Galaxie.”
Man times Charlie Chan was played by a white guy.
White actor playing a black man? Why, look no further than Sir Laurence Olivier playing a Moor in Othello:
Now, here is a cinematic classic - Mickey Rooney playing a bucktoothed and blind Japanese guy in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
Next time think Fjord Galaxie.
That'll work. I saw my first pubic in the back seat of a Fjord Galaxie.
Broadway has gone nuts. There of course is nothing wrong with using people of different race/sex/whatever to play characters. That’s part of “acting”.
But the musical “THe Great Comet” was just cancelled because, after the director tried to replace a black guy playing a russian character with the award-winning Mandy Potenkin, the race warriors threw a fit, Mandy dropped out, the sales dried up, the black actor quit anyway, and now the show is cancelled, and all the minorities playing other white russian characters are out of work.
Which seems to suit the SJW folks, because it’s not about employing minorities, it’s about being outraged if you try to replace a minority with a white person.
Of course, what is likely now is that black actor will never get hired, because who wants to hire someone who, if you try to replace them later, can get your show cancelled.
Meanwhile, shows like Dear White Bread (Dear Evan Hanson) win awards, and are left alone because they didn’t make the mistake of hiring a black person for a role they later had to change out.
Or Sean Connery as a Russian Naval Captain. Or Kevin Costner as Robin Hood.
That Great Comet story was ridiculous, especially since Josh Groban originated the role. I read on the Broadway World forum that the black actor who replaced Groban came to work unprepared, and was very difficult to work with. Now all of these actors are out of work. What a mess.
So this is double standard hypocrisy.
Marvel has taken many white characters and changed them over time.
Can’t take a nonwhite character and make them white?
Effing PC libtard hypocrites. Fiction no less.
Pathetic. Cowardly. Stupid. Unless, of course, the character’s ethnicity is key to the portrayal - in which case the director is a nincompoop for casting this guy in the first place.
How about casting an idiot with a two digit IQ (Mark Ruffalo) to play the Hulk who in his normal state is a brilliant physicist? That’s offensive to everyone who ever passed a high school science class.
Yeah exactly. Ruffalo is completely miscast.
Diversity Street is ONE WAY -—>
I believe the role was originally written for Bruce Lee, due to his "Kato" role in "The Green Hornet."
