Officials at the San Domenico School in California decided recently to remove the Catholic statues and icons in a move to be seen as more inclusive.
The school is celebrating its 167th year.
Officials feared the statues of Jesus and Mary were alienating.
MarinIJ reported:
Removal of a number of statues and other smaller Catholic icons from the campus of San Domenico School in San Anselmo has raised concerns among some parents.
In an email to the school’s board of directors, Dominican Sisters of San Rafael and the head of school, Shannon Fitzpatrick objected to the removal of the statues and other steps the school has taken in an effort to make the school more inclusive.
“Articulating an inclusive foundation appears to mean letting go of San Domenico’s 167-year tradition as a Dominican Catholic school and being both afraid and ashamed to celebrate one’s heritage and beliefs,” wrote Fitzpatrick, whose 8-year-old son attends the school.
She added, “In our time here, the word ‘Catholic’ has been removed from the mission statement, sacraments were removed from the curriculum, the lower school curriculum was changed to world religions, the logo and colors were changed to be ‘less Catholic,’ and the uniform was changed to be less Catholic.”
Responding to follow-up questions Monday, Fitzpatrick wrote, “There are other families having the same concerns I do. Many parents feel if the school is heading in a different direction then the San Domenico community should have been notified before the signing of the enrollment for the following year.”

I’m sure traditional Catholics wrote off that school as a fraud years ago.
yes, this is stunning. A Catholic school removing religious symbols, to be “inclusive”??
Heck, religions have their rituals and symbols and theologies.
The people running this place are out of their minds in some ways. Apologies if this offends anyone. But someone running a Catholic institution, and has the attitude that they need to minimize or exclude symbols of their religion,to prove to the outside world that they are tolerant or inclusive or liberal, is not thinking straight.

There are many liberal or non-Catholics who send their children to Catholic schools to take advantage the usually superior education. These families are easily offended by traditional Catholicism so accomodations are made to not be too Catholic Ask me how I know..
How do you know?
As far as the money aspect of things, is it really worth it, to water down the Catholic atmosphere of the school, just to raise money? IF it’s watered down so much that the school is more non-denominational, then what’s the point?
If the school can’t survive financially, maybe it’s for the best, if to survive financially, it can’t be an actual Catholic school anymore. Just a thought.
Isis winks
Anything for a buck?
According to the school's history page they clearly were established as a Catholic school in 1850. The claim that they were established as California's "first independent and first Catholic" school smacks of revisionism. I suspect they were simply a Catholic school originally. The published "history" makes no specific note of when they dropped their Catholic affiliation or whether they simply decided to "expand" their identity to include open apostasy.
No offense taken. I know quite a few traditional Catholic families. I don’t think I can name a single one that sends their kids to a parish school or one of these silly faux-Catholic schools.
When do they post the verses from the koooran that mandate killing Christians?
I sent my eldest daughter to a Catholic school even though we are not Catholic precisely because of the values they taught. It was the closest thing available and affordable in a good values based education.
“Inclusive”: pandering to homos or muslims.
A Christian school which takes down statues of Jesus from fear of offending non-Christians, is no longer a Christian school. It’s a den of cowards.
“Hey, Barabbas. I’m not getting on this cross....for you”
No it is reasonable .. its just in preparation for the conversion of the church to a mosque ...
