OK, we all know of PCH. Been around forever. I just got a call which said I won. Kinda of a long call. To the point. They/he said I needed to wire $45 to an individual in Star City, Arkansas to pay for taxes. Now was expecting a lot lot more to pay for taxes, but it was only $45. For just $45 I'm half inclined to wire the money.

Anybody hear about this scam? One the one hand she wore@$%^#$^#$^ wait a minute,,,,,

It just seems a complete waste of time to make a phone call for just $45.

Actually I think it’s something like that. If you actually send them the money, they know they have you. And you have skin in the game now. The idea will be to keep you sending good money after bad, as they say.

This is probably really targeting old people.

I tell these people I will need their personal contact info, for when I report them to the Attorney General.

If they are asking for money, it is a scam.

No. You don’t owe anything if you don’t get the money. PCH doesn’t calculate the taxes owed. You and your accountant do that every year before April 15.

It will start with $45 what you pay that they’ll keep stringing you along. It’s a lie.

Take the money you would use to wire to them; tear it up, and throw it out the window. Then take your checking account, empty it into small bills. Throw it out the window.

Getting the drift?

Seriously, no legit company is ever going to ask you for money in order to give you month. Ever.

At best, report the scammers. At worst, remember the feeling of winning...and never call them back.

Sheesh, PCH doesn't call first. They just show up in a creepy van with a dozen balloons, flowers and a great big cardboard check and shove cameras and microphones in your face.

And NO PURCHASE NECESSARY! Don't you watch TV??? :-)

You pay your taxes on your winnings to the USG when you file your 2017 return. Definitely a scam.

Tell me you're joking. Please.

The real PCH would send you a 1099 at the end of the year.

First of all, PCH is not in Star City, Arkansas. NOTHING is in Star City, Arkansas.

Second, are you kidding? If you’re not, it is my pleasure to inform you that you won the Texas Lottery. Send me $45 for the taxes.

If you win something, you do not have to pay anyone anything to collect your winnings.

This is a scam.

Scam calls are often during the day. They try to get elderly folks at home.

This is a well known form of scam. The specific details may vary, but the underlying mechanism is always the same: Send some amount of money to receive a prize. Real prizes NEVER work that way.

A similar scam is one in which the scammers are sending you a check for something, and then you actually do receive a check but it is for a much higher amount than expected. The scammers then ask that you simply send them the difference in some form, usually a wire transfer. In the meantime, unbeknownst to you, the original check which is working its way through the bank's system is actually fraudulent and will be returned by your bank. So you are left holding a worthless check and have forwarded real funds (the "difference") to the scammers who are long gone.

By the way, wife and I love the Hill Country. Looked into buying land to build a small getaway. A single lot is too expensive.
