With the passing of Glen Campbell comes an opportunity to share one of the best tidbits of American music history.
In the 1960s and early 1970s a group of highly skilled "session" musicians played in the recording studios of Los Angeles. They did more than back singers who were not part of bands, they were the musicians we heard on many of the top recordings of the day,
---snip--- he was, like the other members of the Wrecking Crew, one of the most talented musicians in the country when it came to backing famous artists of the day in each of their own styles of music.
Led by guitarist, Tommy Tedesco, a name rarely known outside of musician circles, the Wrecking Crew consisted of as many as 20 or more studios players over the years

Most of the Wrecking Crew were soft-spoken, humble types. Tommy Tedesco was not among the humble.
The book on the WC is also interesting. Some of them were more or less musical savants who experienced mental illness and substance problems.
Interesting how various types of music and singers stimulate the brains of individuals differently, inspire different feelings and even actions. Definite difference in the people who respond to classical music as opposed to pop, rock or rap.Wonder if musical response can be correlated to political beliefs and social values? Always thought that a male voice sung through an electric amplifier stimulates some women into a procreative mode.Witness their behavior at rock concerts.
The Wrecking Crew is streaming on Netflix. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who thinks the noise created today is anything resembling music. For the rest of us it’s great!
GC was a pretty heavy coke user.... among other things...
Definite ping for later in the fallout shelter.
Thanks! Haven’t seen that one, so I’ll definitely check it out.
The Funk Brothers documentary was equally good. They were Motown.
I believe Glen was one of 6 brothers that all played guitar, I can imagine the fun they had. Glen was the prodigy of the bunch beginning at age 4. I guess that is what he was thinking when he called it the “Good Time” Hour.
fantastic! thanks!
Every time you hear nifty little lead in riff on California Dreamin’ you’ll know who did it.
I heard somewhere that Glen Campbell is getting sympathy cards and letters from people he did not even know.
I'm amazed that Glen couldn't read music (and I've stated this here,) but Carol confirmed that. It's truly amazing that he was able to accomplish this without reading music! It's obvious from the people remembering him that he was a really terrific guy, and Carol remembers him really fondly. In fact the solo on Wichita Lineman was Glen playing Carol's Danelectro 6 string bass.

The Wrecking Crew were the musicians behind Beach Boys Pet Sounds album.
They say Brian Wilson was a cut above all others they worked with.
So many big hits back in the sixties can be traced to the Wrecking Crew. The Monkees controversy was big news back then, but in reality, it was SOP in the music industry.
Well played!
