Trump's protectionist views

Posted on 08/04/2017 5:55:06 PM PDT by TakebackGOP

How much of the economy has been affected by Trump's protectionist policies? People on both sides predicted he'd create a recession with his policies. I know he killed TPP and had a tariff on lumber from Canada, but has he taxed companies and put tariffs on other goods? Are the jobs the result of just getting rid of many regulations?

The thing is there is a Spectrum:

We are here:

PROTECTIONISM -——————————|-—GLOBALISM

We used to be here:

PROTECTIONISM -———————————|-GLOBALISM

Trump wants us here:

PROTECTIONISM ———————|—————GLOBALISM

The globalists don’t even want a rational balance they want full tilt globalism...

They had to make up a sinister sounding word to describe looking out for sovereign interests. Next we’ll find out that people who rely on verified information to make decisions are “factists”.

jobs and tax increases are a direct result of anticipation in new tax policy Just wait until the tax policy is implemented

US employment has broadly benefitted from a decline in the value of the dollar, which makes exports cheaper and imports more expensive, thereby spurring domestic hiring to expand production for the sake of both exports and import substitution. In addition, the repeal of a large swath of Obama regulations and anticipated tax cuts have renewed business and consumer confidence. Finally, low fuel prices and an abundance of cheap natural gas has marginally reduced a major cost element and benefitted both business and consumers.

The irony is that the globalists have to be one-sided protectionists themselves while championing so-called “free trade” for other countries they are targeting. As Marx put it, in a speech to the Democratic Association of Brussels in 1848:
“(I)n general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive—it breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade.”
That is the plan the globalists are following, with the biggest target being the USA.

I (completely) agree.

100%.

There is not currently any protectionism by America.

However now we have a gigantic, protectionist behemoth making 90% of computers in the world, 80% of the air conditioners, 80% of the energy-saving lamps in the world, 74% of the solar panels, 70% of the cell phones, 60% of the cement, 50% of the pork, and 45% of world ship-building.

America needs to bring back US industries, to America.

America needs to be for America, once again.

He ain’t doing either. Those have to originate in the House.

No such bills have been generated. Trump has just used his bully pulpit

I know that he doesn’t, but then the 1 million jobs isn’t from tariffs or taxing companies.

Trump has been encouraging companies to come to the US. He reopened coal mining and other energy sources.. He has removed the regulations, eg EPA, that he can.

That is not protectionism.

Protectionism creates jobs and factories in the USA. It’s a good thing. All the founding fathers were protectionists. ALL OFF THEM.

It’s hard to determine which economist was worse for America, Keynes or Smith?

I don’t think you understand the very positive effects of protectionism.
