Hugh Freeze resigns from Ole Miss after 'misdial' call to escort service on school-issued phone

In a stunning turn of events, Hugh Freeze has resigned from Ole Miss. The move comes after the school found at least one call from the coach to an escort service on his school-issued cell phone. Athletic director Ross Bjork said the initial phone call originally was “attributed to a misdial.” But further vetting of Freeze’s phone records disclosed a “pattern of conduct” that led the school administration to confront Freeze this week. Bjork said he and school administrators spoke to Freeze Wednesday night.

I think Coach Freeze got into the wrong line of work. He should’ve been a politician, and more specifically a politician elected to Congress. There he could make all the “misdials” he wants and no one would think twice about it.

Curious that after a 2-6 conference season and no bowl game, suddenly the school decides to look at the calls on his school-issued cell phone.

Things that make you go hmmm.

I believe Ole Miss is also under serious NCAA investigation, too. No wonder why recruiters from both Alabama and Auburn are loathe to recruit in Mississippi.

A distinction without a difference.

This guy was a bad dude. Terrible program violations. They’ll be set back for years. And trying to lie about who was responsible.

This came to light during the discovery phase of Houston Nutt’s defamation lawsuit against Freeze and the school for trying to blame Nutt for the NCAA investigation, not because of a losing record.

Can’t believe ANYONE here is trying to spin this.

He made his own calls? I thought the boosters were supposed to make these kinds of arrangements for the coaching staff and top players - directly and indiscreetly. :)

As suspension ends, Greanias faces difficult return to Metro (after cruising rent boys)

As George Greanias returns to work today at Metro, it’s unclear how well he can overcome public humiliation to regain the respect and authority he had earned in less than a year as the transit agency’s leader.

Greanias, the Metropolitan Transit Authority president and CEO, resumes his post following a one-week suspension without pay, a punishment imposed by the Metro board July 28 after he got caught surfing sexually explicit websites on Metro’s premises using its wireless Internet system.

Since the surprising announcement 10 days ago, Greanias has been publicly silent, spending time with family members out of town. The Houston Chronicle’s attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful.

...A routine audit last month of Metro employees’ Internet use showed that Greanias used his personal computer in the Metro building to access adult-content sites on 14 days between Feb. 9 and July 1. There was no indication he had viewed child pornography or hired prostitutes, Metro said, although the sites included escort services.

...Greanias, 63, earns $235,000 a year, plus benefits..

...Joe Bontke, outreach manager for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Houston, said in an interview that the etiquette of electronic technology is still in flux.

“We are all learning that mistakes are going to be made,” Bontke said. “I would bet that the first pencil invented didn’t have an eraser...

There was a gay escort service run from Barney Frank’s apartment and he was given a pass.

Exactly. The DC Swamp dwellers can do whatever whenever they want, and on our dime too. The reason these people hardly worry about scandal is that everyone in DC has something to hide. It’s assured mutual destruction if dirt is spilled on anyone in that town.

I can beat that. I was once on an IT contract, where the client company I worked for, set up a phone number for a conference call to one of *their* client companies.

The phone number turned out to be a typo when calling it brought up a menu for a phone sex line...

The rest of the story? OM has been under investigation by the NCAA for recruiting violations (and other issues) for the past four years. You read that right. Four years. And Robert Mueller isn’t running the probe. Some of the violations occurred under former coach Houston Nutt, but most allegedly took place under Freeze’s watch.

At the first meeting betweeen Freeze and the NCAA, the coach greeted the investigators with a flurry of Bible verses, as an exhibition of his faith, and to indicate he was innocent of the accusations. The NCAA considered that poor form, and put Freeze squarely in the cross-hairs.

The case against Freeze and OM has been built largely on the “testimony” of two former recruits who subsequently signed with rival Mississippi State. The NCAA took the unprecedented step of offering them immunity for their testimony—something that has never occurred in previous investigations. The recruits allege OM offered favors (including cash) to play football in Oxford, but the allegations took on a new wrinkle when an audio tape surfaced; it was a conversation between one of the players’ mothers and a former OM coach. During their chat, the mother lists the inducements being offered by other schools (namely Mississippi State) and asks if Ole Miss with match the “offer.” As of today, the other schools are not under investigation by the NCAA.

And it gets even more interesting. The owner of a local clothing store in Oxford has been accused by the recruits of offering illegal inducements, but key elements of their story have already been debunked. And the store’s owner has filed a slander suit against the recruits, which will put a lot of folks under deposition and reveal even more sordid details.

As for Freeze and OM, their hearing before the NCAA is scheduled for later this year. There is every reason to believe Freeze would have received a multi-game suspension and perhaps a “show cause” which could ban him from the game for several years.

Discovery of Freeze’s phone calls—through discovery relating to a lawsuit by former Coach Nutt—gave OM a chance to cut their losses. There was a standard, “morals” clause in Freeze’s contract, so contact with the escort services put him in violation of his employment agreement. And with Freeze gone, there is already talk that the NCAA may go “easier” on OM than they would with Freeze as the head coach.

I’m a lifelong OM fan and had great respect for Coach Freeze. But he’s revealed himself as nothing more than a hypocrite, professing his deep Christian faith while living a very different life in private. As Christians, we all fall short, and I hope Freeze can overcome his problems and turn his life around. His conduct was unacceptable (and grossly stupid). At a time his career was hanging by a thread (and the college was still willing to back him), Freeze gave them the grounds for his dismissal.

Despite that, Freeze will coach again. He inherited an OM program at rock bottom and beat Alabama two years in a row. There are plenty of college ADs and presidents willing to let bygones be bygones, after a period of contrition.

Lest we forget, Mike Price was able to resume his coaching career. Price is the guy who was fired as head coach at Alabama before ever coaching a game. Just weeks into his tenure, he was observed at a strip club in Pensacola, and later had a tryst with two working girls at his hotel—and one “borrowed” his university credit card and charged thousands of dollars in food from room service. It was later revealed that during their tryst, the girls yelled “Roll Tide,” at Price, who replied “It’s rolling, baby.”

OM is probably waiting for one of the escorts to reveal that Freeze led a chant of “Hotty Toddy” during one of their encounters.
