National Moon Day is observed annually on July 20 and commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. NASA reported the moon landing as being “…the single greatest technological achievement of all time.”

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed the first humans, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on the moon. Armstrong stepped first onto the lunar surface, six hours after landing and spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft.

Aldrin spent slightly less time but together they collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth.

Michael Collins piloted Apollo 11 and remained alone in orbit until Armstrong and Aldrin returned.

NASA reported the moon landing as being “…the single greatest technological achievement of all time.”

With the single greatest announcement of all time. Neil Armstrong was the first man to speak from the heavens. Hundreds of millions of witnesses, looking up. So just whose script was that, anyway? NASAs (or Neil's) in name only. Said and remembered exactly as it should have been, with no indefinite article.

One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.

Adam: the first man to walk on the earth.
Neil: the first man to walk on the moon.

Adam + Neil permutes to "ideal man." (Hebrew: "Ani Lamed", אני למד)

Armstrong has handled the demands of his fame by rationing himself. While some of his colleages, and others at NASA, wish he were a more visible spokesman for the agency and for the cause of space exploration, most of the others praise his approach. They say Armstrong was the ideal “choice” for the role of first man on the moon, as if it were an office to be filled. Were he more visible, they say, he would cheapen its currency.

The day after the moon landing is when I met my first conspiracy theorist. I was a kid and I was at my grandmother's house.

"Grandma, did you stay up and watch the astronauts land on the moon"

"You are just a kid. You are too young to know they faked the whole thing. No way I was going to stay up and watch that garbage."

"Grandma, that is crazy. I saw it on TV."

P.S. "Crazy" Grandma lived to 106, never had any significant health problems. She never brought up the moon landing topic again, but every now and then when I mentioned something I saw on TV she would wink at me.
