A woman who survived being severely burned in a campfire accident is talking about about what happened that day, and the obstacles shes had to overcome since as she rebuilds her life.
Courtney Waldon, 27, of Tallapoosa, Georgia, says she was sitting by a campfire, cooking last September when her husband lit the fire.
Some of the gas got on her body, then she was engulfed in flames. I thought I was dying, she told People Magazine.
A horrific campfire accident left a Georgia mother with burns over 40 percent of her body. (GoFundMe) Waldon was in an induced coma for a month, and finally came home after 51 days; she was left with fourth-degree and third-degree burns.
It was horrible, it was the worst feeling Ive ever felt, Waldon told Barcroft. But its made me stronger today.
Waldon, who is mother to a 5-year-old daughter, would face another obstacle shortly after she was released from the hospital she told People her husband left her two weeks after she returned home.
She says her daughter is the reason she is still living, and is hoping her story helps others.
I shouldnt be here but I am, she told People. I know that there are people out there who have it worse than I do. Ive always been a believer that everything happens for a reason and I still believe that.
According to a GoFundMe page set up in Waldons name, she has undergone seven surgeries and has another skin graft surgery scheduled for January.
The page says she may never return to work due to her injuries. A group of people are trying to build a home for her and her little girl, and are hoping to raise money through the Go Fund Me page.
So far, over $92,000 has been raised.
Choctaw say...
Indians build small fire, everyone stays close. White men build huge fire, everyone sits very far away.
FR is a hotbed of stupidity tonight. This is about the 6th thread in a row that has me face palming at the replies.
I think the recent outages chased off all the smart people.
I'm going to bed.
I was a Mess Sgt, in an Infantry support battalion in the Army Guard.
Between the M-2 burner units (1960s on), the M-1948 burner units (those with all the copper tubing, the gas fired immersion heaters, and old mess hall equipment, I have blown up more gasoline and natural gas equipment than any five other guys.
My biggest near miss however was in the Boy Scouts. We had a tiny kindling fire underway in a large fire-lay. We had just lit it and I was backing away as a young scout came walking up with a can to help. He had seen his dad squirt charcoal lighter fluid on a fire and this eleven year old thought that white gas was the same sort of thing and wanted to help because it was cold.
If I hadn’t seen he had something in his hand, he and I would have been... well white gas is even worse than gasoline and it was about a two quart can.
Oh, no! That cannot be the same person.
What a horrible tragedy.
Uh yeah it does.
Propane is heavier than air and thus hugs the ground.
If everyone who commented on this story made a small donation, it would make a big difference to this woman and her daughter.
Just a thought.

You are right. I rethought that and realize that having control of propane release on my 500,000 Btu torch is the key to safe use.
Don’t use propane tanks as gun targets and be careful with spud gunz.
Her husband of two months relit a campfire (with a can of gas)
she was sitting near and ‘accidentally’ got gas on her?
Fishy, indeed.
This is so sad. Here is another article on this...

......After my husband left that was also hard on her. She thought I had abandoned her when I was at the hospital, and then she thought he abandoned her too. I told her that he burnt mommy and that life would be better for them without him, she says. And it has been.
She added: Im so grateful for how far Ive come. Im getting stronger every day to prove to everybody that I can be a fit mother and do everything I could with her before the accident.
Sounds like attempted murder. Hope a thorough investigation was done.
Did the moron husband attempt to kill her or was he drunk?
I burn brush piles when they get so high I cant toss any thing else up top. About every 2 years.Dry as a bone.
K1 is my only accelerator and I get a few pieces of fire wood good and wet, place them at 12,4 and 8 o’clock lite em and wahla moments later a 50 foot peak.
Pretty intense as I can feel the air rushing towards the thing until it dies down a bit.
sounds like accidentally on purpose she was set on fire by the pr8ck husband. Hope he will be charged with attempted murder soon.
No dimwit, they meant it sounds like the husband lit her up on purpose
Poor woman. I hope she has changed her insurance beneficiary and I hope that man never comes near her again. There may not be enough evidence but his conduct is extremely suspicious.
No one said that she did not get burned they are saying that the story of the accident sounds fishy.
You think the husband's actions were perfectly reasonable?
Pouring gas on a fire that your wife is sitting beside sounds like a murder attempt.
Or dumber than dirt.
Or drunk as a skunk.
Haha. You must be smart to have had it figured out BEFORE it hit you. You know, that’s called the “ohnosecond.” The interval between when you make the unrecoverable mistake and the experiencing of the consequences. :-)
