‘It’s made me stronger’: Woman burned in campfire accident and left by husband speaks out

A woman who survived being severely burned in a campfire accident is talking about about what happened that day, and the obstacles she’s had to overcome since as she rebuilds her life.

Courtney Waldon, 27, of Tallapoosa, Georgia, says she was sitting by a campfire, cooking last September when her husband lit the fire.

Some of the gas got on her body, then she was engulfed in flames. “I thought I was dying,” she told People Magazine.

A horrific campfire accident left a Georgia mother with burns over 40 percent of her body. (GoFundMe) Waldon was in an induced coma for a month, and finally came home after 51 days; she was left with fourth-degree and third-degree burns.

“It was horrible, it was the worst feeling I’ve ever felt,” Waldon told Barcroft. “But it’s made me stronger today.”

Waldon, who is mother to a 5-year-old daughter, would face another obstacle shortly after she was released from the hospital – she told People her husband left her two weeks after she returned home.

She says her daughter is the reason she is still living, and is hoping her story helps others.

“I shouldn’t be here but I am,” she told People. “I know that there are people out there who have it worse than I do. I’ve always been a believer that everything happens for a reason and I still believe that.”

According to a GoFundMe page set up in Waldon’s name, she has undergone seven surgeries and has another skin graft surgery scheduled for January.

The page says she may never return to work due to her injuries. A group of people are trying to build a home for her and her little girl, and are hoping to raise money through the Go Fund Me page.

So far, over $92,000 has been raised.

Some of the “gas” got on her? Why would they need gas to light a campfire?

Scout Water is dangerous stuff.

A HS friend passed from using gasoline to accelerate his already slowly going charcoal fire.

Ya, doesn't make sense.

Courtney Waldon, 27, of Tallapoosa, Georgia, says she was sitting by a campfire, cooking last September when her husband lit the fire.

If she was cooking over a campfire... why would the husband need to light the fire? Sounds very fishy.

Good question. Also, it's probably the reporter's WORDING of the woman's statement, but it makes it seem like she was cooking BEFORE he lit the fire.

"Courtney Waldon, 27, of Tallapoosa, Georgia, says she was sitting by a campfire, cooking last September when her husband lit the fire. "

I would suggest maybe what the reporter meant is that she was cooking over a small camping stove that was near where her husband was trying to start up the campfire (for warmth and light only). Otherwise it makes no sense.

Neighbor almost achieved the same when he doused his brush pile with GAS vs K1.
He went in before lighting it and came back, fumes had settled along the ground and through out the mass of kindling and when hi lit the match the entire thing blew up singing the crap out of him.

I found some more info:

Courtney Waldon vividly remembers sitting by a campfire on September 30, 2016, cooking tuna steak and asparagus. The 27-year-old mom was on her phone using Facebook as her husband of two months got up to relight the fire. After swinging a can of gas, some of it got on her body. The next thing she knew she was engulfed in flames.

Thank God for FR sleuths such as you, This was a setup from the very beginning

The month long induced coma and the 51 days in the hospital, along with the fourth-degree and third-degree burns was just a ruse to set up a cash cow via the GoFundMe website..........

Nice catch!

So her husband of 2 months left her 2 weeks after she returned from the hospital? She spent more time in a coma than she did being married.

I prefer to use my 500,000 Btu propane torch to get the fire pit going. Takes ~30 sec. for a well layed fire. Propane doesn’t hug the ground and reach out to touch you...
