While buyout talks continue, it currently looks like the number of editors who will be given pink slips at the New York Times will be around 60, sources tell Media Ink.
The seven two-person teams of editors breaking the news to those who are staying and to those who are going are being referred to in the newsroom as death panels, insiders said.
As part of a streamlining process unveiled by Executive Editor Dean Baquet and Managing Editor Joe Kahn, the title of copy editor and backfield editor is being eliminated.

I’m kind of shocked to learn they actually have editors. One certainly would never guess that given the quality of the writing.

S! p0wnz the Slimes.
If you find a copy of “Who Moved My Cheese?” on your desk you know you’re on the hit list.
Sounds like the movie “Office Space”
Hey - where is my stapler?
Still not sick of winning.
How many jobs will be set aside for women and minorities?
check the latches on the windows
clear the side walks
There are some jobs where, if you are going to have an affirmative-action hire, you might as well leave the job empty.
They have copy editors to make sure that phrases like “pro-life” and “left wing extremist” don’t get in a Times article. But with the new SpeakWrite 84, the remaining Times editors can maintain ideological purity with half the staff.
“Death Panels”
LOL!
To top it off Sarah Palin is suing the New York Times for libel.
Which will only worsen their ailments.

This must be government work. fourteen people to tell 60 people “You’re fired.”

Take them out to a gourmet deli for lunch before they have to start eating Mexican like the high school graduates.
Editors? We don’t need no stinkin’ editors. We just make stuff up!
I actually think this is sad news.
I dislike the NYT’s liberal bias, but I am an admirer of good writing, and in the past the NYT represented the nation’s best writing...as William Safire, Jack Kilpatrick and S.I. Hayakawa stated so many times.
I read The Atlantic, The New Yorker and the NYT for the excellence of their non-political writing, and what we’re seeing is the downfall of one of the great papers of the West, just like the Oregonian, The SF Chronicle, the OC Register and smaller, regional papers like the Seattle PI, the Spokane Spokesman-Review and so many others.
I was raised on newspaper ink, my grandmother was an editor and I read greats like Herb Caen, Charlie McCabe, Stan Delaplane, Dave Barry, Pat McManus, LM Boyd, Jack Kilpatrick-The Writer’s Art, Tom Steenstra, Scott Ostler and even George Will when he wasn’t being a somnambulistic faux conservative.
I just love well-written, well-exposited writing and these background editors represented the best copy editing on the planet.
“This must be government work. fourteen people to tell 60 people Youre fired.

Maybe they fourteen are needed for security. Maybe they’ll be leading the fired sixty out in groups to a Grey Lady public space for a group hug that’ll be pictured the next day in the NYT.
“Just keep passing the open windows.”
Love, Garp
