Office air conditioning is too cold, women think, and science says they're right

To all the women bundled in sweaters and blankets in your office air conditioning even though it's 100 degrees outside: A recent study says that it's not all in your head. It really IS cold.

As many women bundle up against the arctic air conditioning, their male counterparts one cubicle over have no idea what all the fuss is about. It turns out that science says the office A/C may be biased toward temperatures that more comfortable for men — thanks to a formula from more than 50 years ago.

Exactly! It’s easier to get warm than cool in an office.

I laughed. I am annoyed by obnoxious contemporary music played a loud volumes in my local grocery stores among other public places. Oftentimes, it is whiny men music or females screeching at excessive levels. I am there to shop, read nutritional labels and save money where necessary. I heard one song that was so unpleasant I asked my GF who gasped in horror when she played it on YouTube (IIRC, the title was “I Will Love Again.”) It was beyond dreadful, it was painful.

ASHRAE indoor design temperature for cooling office space is 75-degrees.

In my old office, we solved this by installing a “dead” thermostat.

People would adjust it up and down all day, and the temp stated at 74F.

Did they ask if they were menopausal, on blood thinners?

I have the opposite problem, hubby takes a blood thinner and is always cold. Thus AC is set on 80, he doesn’t want the ceiling fan on even. And I’m dripping sweat in a Tank Top and Shorts. He could put more clothes on, I’m at the limit of how low I will undress at 68. And past that Menopause crap. He sleeps under a quilt, I rarely even pull up the sheet till it turns cooler.

We don’t generate the heat men do, unless you are overweight, a man’s larger body mass, higher protein in take ups his body core temp, our physiology doesn’t work the same way.

They could raise the temperature a few degrees but then the women would complain that all the men in the office have B.O. Bitch, bitch, bitch...

I would agree that 71 is a bit cool. I’d suggest 73-74 for working in an office.

They should be at home baking cookies. The oven will warm them up.

That never bothered me, I didn’t do hormones, on the other hand I don’t tolerate heat well, while hubby is freezing at 80 degrees I’m sweating in Tank Top/shorts. Being retired has that privilege.

Some meds cause hot flashes though. Those I dump.

Okay, so to the media — like all other leftist issues — it’s a matter of separating classes, sexes, and races into categories against each other. The basic issue is this:

It’s MUCH easier to warm up than to cool down. If women are cold, instead of complaining about sexism in air conditioning, put on a sweater! Outside of taking your clothes off, there’s no easy way for a man to cool down in a warm environment.

I don’t work for the government and our building AC runs exceptionally cold. I brought in an IR thermometer and it was coming from the vent at 62. We do, however, work in IT so most of us are male mouth breathers.

How awful of you, sexist. We LOVE our women in the workplace. Chocolate chips and brownies every Friday.

I worked in a building with a screwed-up HVAC system. When it was 95 out, some offices on our floor got as low as 59, so EVERYONE was cold!

I used to work in a building with many older women. The men wanted the a/c set higher, but they were outnumbered by the menopausal women.

It was so cold in the summer that one of the guys loaned me a space heater for under my desk.

It is not men vs women - it is well-padded people vs skinny people. I bring a sweater or fleece jacket to the office. No problem.

I used to work in an industry with mostly women and there is absolutely no way you can satisfy women with the temperature in the office. One is always too hot and one is always too cold.

My dad had the same issue in an office he worked in and finally disconnected the thermostat and installed another in a hidden location. Each woman would “adjust” the temperature and think it was getting colder or warmer and were happy. Meanwhile, he controlled the temp and kept it the same.

“First the nonsense about men leaving the toilet seat up after liberals insist on unisex bathrooms, then childish complaints about men spreading their legs too widely when seated, now this - feminism consists almost entirely of women trying to annoy and irritate men in the most childish ways possible.”

Mom used to say “give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile.” Men have gone along to get along far too long. Time to say no. It does actually work. They don’t like it at first, but women appreciate a strong man. Not an A-hole mind you, but a man with conviction. And yes, I have been married and have been advised not to go to sleep first.

70 degrees is ridiculous. I keep mine at 78. Heat at 72 in winter.

When I worked in TV engineering I carried a light jacket even summertime in south Florida. Any facility full of electronics has fridgid AC. Also, sometimes it’s nice to see the gals in the cold, said the sexist male pig!

It’s not the heat it’s the humidity. Drier air feels colder.

Bingo! What most do not realize is that it is called Air Conditioning for a reason. It is not simply Air Cooling. The major lifting is with the reduction of moisture in the the air - the cooling is a side benefit.

I had to buy a combo thermometer and hygrometer to SHOW my female staff members that it wasn't "cold" it was just dry(er).

They were amazed that the temp remained 75 but with a humidity at 50% it was soooo cooooold.

In Florida you MUST keep indoor humidity below 70% or you will have spore germination and mold. Most businesses run AC units all night long to avoid that.
