We are being indoctrinated to accept ugliness as a form of beauty.

Brutalism =/= the sum whole of modern architecture. It is just the low-hanging fruit that launches a million diatribes about how anything not neoclassical, Gothic or Victorian is garbage architecture.

Nobody said brutalism was the sum whole.

But the video is primarily about brutalism.

I'd like to see an example of modern architecture that you believe is beautiful. Could you post a photo or url?

A fire would be a godsend, but I don’t suppose it would burn

You can burn anything, if you try hard enough.

Even concrete ...

My point is that when structures that we consider classic masterpieces today were judged at the time, they were often considered eyesores at the time, just as many contemporary buildings are today.

Yeah, those crate engines aren’t expensive. You can go way lower than that 4 grand.

“a punch card”

That’s exactly what I thought as well.

2005 Corolla.

425,000 miles.

Jus’ sayin’ ...

I rented a 2010 Corolla once, best little car I ever had the pleasure to drive. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a reliable little car.

I don't want to own a little car. The poster I responded to maintained that even ten year old cars aren't as good. I don't WANT 12 airbags, multiple backups cameras and screens, or a stool pigeon for a vehicle. A car is personal, an extension of self, like clothes. That was the point in the Prisoner, where the main character had an unusual car (Lotus 7) that he built himself. He was extremely individual.

A prominent architect once said of Boston City Hall that it looked like the crate Fanueil Hall came in.

Love that line, and so true!

I believe Ada Loiuse Huxtable, architectural critic for the New York Times coined the original phrase, “The Kennedy Center looks like box in which Watergate came.”

That would have been in the mid 60’s.

The B-52 bomber was once described as “the crate the B-47 came in.” The B-52 debuted in 1954, and the B-47, the first jet bomber, went on line in 1952.

Wow. I don’t mean to be insulting, but to me those are hideous, especially the last. But I guess the old saying applies, de gustibus non disputandum est.

I like Rivendell from the LOTR movies. Question, what motivates the architect? Glorifying self and man, or glorifying God and His creation? Brings to mind any outer space aliens. Has anyone topped humans for beauty?
