Im sure many of us have made the ubiquitous Patriotic Sheet Cake, with strawberries and blueberries; but I thought a pie would be a nice change from that I especially like this rustic-looking round one, with rhubarb, from King Arthur; and can definitely see Betsy Ross making it:

And heres a flag-shaped one, from Simply Recipes:

My grandmother only made potato salad in the Summer, and her salad is one of my great childhood food memories. I have a co-worker friend who makes it exactly the same: it was very plain no eggs, nothing sweet and thats still the way I make it. Potato Salad is one thing that is really only good when it's home-made the store-bought ones always seem to have undercooked potatoes (probably because they hold up longer that way) and too much sweetness, not enough 'tart'. This is the recipe Ive used in recent years, tweaked from one found online. The only difference between this and what I remember from childhood, is a little cayenne (There were no hot and spicy foods in my Grandmother's repertoire; but I grew up and 'traveled' ;-)
It seems that it is generally considered best to boil the potatoes in their skins, and then peel and dice them when theyve cooled slightly; but I do it this way:
Plain Ol Potato Salad
6 medium russet potatoes, peeled, quartered
½ med. White onion, minced
1 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1 cup celery, diced
Boil potatoes until just tender when tested with the tip of a knife, drain well, and let cool to room temperature. Cut into 1-inch pieces and add to a large bowl.
In a smaller bowl mix all the other ingredients, except the celery. Add to the potatoes, then add the celery, and fold gently with a spatula until everything is mixed. Taste and adjust seasonings; and chill for at least an hour before serving, preferably overnight.

So pretty. Been on the road & I am craving a sweet thing.
Could also do the berry topping on a plain cheesecake.....just a thought.
Thanks for the funnies, Fiddlstix. Hope you’re ok.
Well, I’m slow, so.........?
I’ve never noticed that in my ethnic store, though it may be there. Where do you find it?
I’m glad our thread brought back happy memories of your mom :-)
I don’t know why, maybe it was a ‘Virginia’ thing; but my granny just never put eggs in it - but what you describe sounds like it would make a very nice presentation.
I like egg rolls. They were my introduction to the Chinese hot mustard, in the restaurant.
There used to be some frozen things you could buy in the supermarket - they were like little 1-inch pillows. Maybe it was La Choy who made them. But I never see them anymore. Really great, fast ‘pseudo Chinese’ at home.
Aaack! I found them! My brother loved these:

“ATK seems to be very proprietary about their recipes”
Not if you pay for them....
As far as very proprietary about their recipes, A friend of mine’s mother made a terrific BBQ sauce. For years she would never give out the recipe.
Well when he moved up to Minnesota with my best friend, I helped them move. We get up to Minneapolis and he mentions his mother gave him a copy of the recipe. Mistake.
While he was outside unloading the truck, I and my bud found it, copied it, and to this day he still doesn’t know!
It’s the only thing I’ve every “stolen”.
Thanks much for telling me about Raita. Never heard about it before. I’m thinking cilantro, cumin, cayenne.... Mexican. Potential!!! THX!
Well....
The kid came back with a WHOLE BUNCH of bananas, after all, he had a 100 bucks to spend.
Us S/A’s at the bar agreed with the kid and I will say us regulars kind of snickered when the original money changed hands as - If he(the Bartender) would have asked ME to do him a favor, I would have spent the hundred also (You don’t get asked again for a long while)
BUT the bartender KNOWS/KNEW that if he had handed one of us a hundred he would have explained what he meant by a bunch....
“red tomato powder.”
I’m addicted to tomatoes. Thanks! I’ll check this out.
Should be easy to find...the ONLY perk of living in a sanctuary city. Sad lol.

LOL. Well, to me, a “bunch” is a bunch of bananas connected at the stems.
I would have just bought the biggest BUNCH (not ‘30 Thousand Pounds’) and taken my change, and come back :-)
Never thought of putting bacon in potato salad. Where in the heck has my brain been???
I put it in about half of my vegie salads. And a chunk of my family is German!
Got potato salad and cooked bacon. Mix em together for my side for tomorrows dinner. Thank you.
Knorr is the brand “Caldo de tomate”
My aunt used to make this wonderful chocolate fudge. She wouldn’t share her recipe (one of THOSE people) and made everyone think that it was somehow very special.
When she died, the family found the recipe, and it was pretty much the same Chocolate Fudge recipe that was published everywhere at the time, and which everyone used back then - with marshmallow cream in it.
I’m sure she exercised very special technique, though :-)
(However, we never found her Penuche recipe - which was to DIE FOR! and maybe there was a little ‘smoke-and-mirrors’ going on there :-)
Thanks! I’m sure I’ll find it - the little store is full of Knorr :-)
Best part of international grocery stores are Knorr and Maggi products.
Thanks for the info. Caldo de tomate sounds great.
Very different than what they sell in normal stores. Maggi’s Pfeffer Soße and Krauter Soße are fun. Love buying new weird stuff and checkin it out.
Well yes, what any sane, logical person would do.
BUT
If one doesn’t want to go to the store they may tend to ‘screw’ up the order just so they don’t get asked again.
Remember ‘we’ are talking about a HS kid that was working as a busboy at a restaurant/bar.
I do believe I may have ‘whispered’ to him on the way
“how many bananas can you buy for a hundred” (that would have been my style)
Remember the lady that was concerned about a number of wrecks on a highway that happened to have a deer crossing sign in a curve. She called a radio show and said maybe if they moved the sign to the straightaway people would be able to slow down for any deer in the road.
‘They’ roasted her, it went viral and she was considered a laughing stock, EXCEPT by ‘Me & my ilk’ which I consider it to be a viable solution.
Remember Wry isn’t always a drink or type of bread<: <:
Oh yes, I’ve had those. Pretty good.
It says there is chicken flavor in it too but all I can taste is strong tomato flavor.
