Hugh Jackman has been cast as former George McGovern campaign manager, Colorado senator, and failed Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart in director Jason Reitmans upcoming political drama The Frontrunner. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 48-year-old Logan star will play Hart, who was widely considered the frontrunner to secure the Democratic nomination for president in 1988 before news reports alleging an extramarital affair between the Colorado senator and Donna Rice sank his campaign.
In May of 1987, Hart famously told the New York Times to follow me around after rumors had surfaced about the candidates alleged affair; the Miami Herald published a report the same day claiming that Hart had spent the weekend at his Washington, D.C. townhouse with a woman later identified as Rice. Hart was also famously photographed with Rice on a yacht named Monkey Business, on which the pair sailed to Bimini in March, 1987.
The candidate suspended his campaign later that month, though he returned to the race briefly in December before dropping out again. Mike Dukakis ultimately earned the Democratic nomination, but lost the general election to George H.W. Bush.
Jackman is set to appear next in The Greatest Showman, in which he plays legendary circus man P.T. Barnum. Reitman is reportedly in post-production on the Charlize Theron-starring comedy Tully.
News of Jackmans casting as Hart comes as several other in-demand actors have been cast as politicians in recent weeks. On Tuesday, The Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort signed on to play former president John F. Kennedy in the historical drama Mayday 109, while Oscar-winner Christian Bale will reportedly play former Vice President Dick Cheney in an upcoming film from The Big Short writer-director Adam McKay.

I thought that Gary Hart had retired from politics, but I see on Wikipedia that he has held several appointed positions during different administrations. He is still married to his wife Lee.
“Why would anyone pay to see a movie about Gary Hart?”
Are you nuts? This is a $500 million blockbuster for sure! That’s before world rights and action figures.
ROFL!! Now that’s funny!!
I attended a small group meeting with him at college before he ran for President.
He could blab about public policy for hours—a walking talking liberal cliche’.
When the Donna Rice scandal broke I was laughing so hard...
lol
Interesting. I did not know that Gary Hart(pence) had adamantium claws. Should be an entertaining movie. :>)
You recall correctly. She turned her life around.
well of course she does. I can’t tell ya how many “bad girls” that become holier than thou when they get older.
Wow.
Thirty years ago. I was in college.
Some things that happened thirty years ago still seem like yesterday.
This, though, does seem like a long time ago.
I don’t see how this movie won’t bomb.
Hugh Jackman is much more than an action hero, although that made him rich. I saw a video of him playing the lead in Oklahoma and he was great. He has a terrific range of skills.
Turning your life around is inherently hypocritical?
either her or Rachel McAdams...
This movie,at most, would have been a TV movie of the week, maybe 30 years ago. In this day and age no one remembers Hart, Donna Rice, or cares. Another money losing Liberal Green Lighted piece of crap that will wither and die at the box office.
I enjoyed him in “Australia.” He’s playing P.T. Barnum in an upcoming film, and interestingly enough, he’s also playing a character named “Curly” in a new movie titled “Broadway 4D”, which is the same name of the “Oklahoma” role he played. He’s a good actor, and very versatile like you said.
Only to the smug and sanctimonious.
Not even if Huge Jack Man plays Hart as Logan.
Amber Heard also resembles Donna in her 20s.
How about one about my favorite ex-presidential candidate John Edwards? The plot would have extramarital sex, out of wedlock children, a cover up, cozy deal with UNC to run some kind of anti-poverty institute there...and get paid for it. Feuds with the neighbors about his compound near Chapel Hill. Shyster lawyerly doings. Too much drama to list!
