Is Serena Williams only as good as the male tennis player ranked 700th in the world? According to tennis veteran John McEnroe, quite possibly yes.
That’s what he said in an interview that aired on Sunday — and his assessment sparked some debate online and a stern rebuke from Williams on Twitter where she said his statements are “not factually based” and that she has “never played anyone ranked ‘there.’”
So, what exactly did McEnroe say to get this kind of response from the top player in women’s tennis?
In an interview that aired on Sunday, NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked McEnroe about his new book, “But Seriously,” and questioned the way he qualified hsi praise for Williams as “the best female player in the world.”

Maybe Serena should show Mcenroe how the game is played by asking him to accompany her while she goes to the bank to cash checks.
McEnroe is refreshingly non-PC. The NPR shill was trying to gin something up by bringing up the feminist angle, even though Serena looks more like a linebacker than a tennis player.
She is grunty and tenacious, but no match for top male players. Anyone built like that is not top tier for tennis as far as finesse & footspeed.
MMA, maybe.
Then she plays the pregnancy card, “Don’t pick on me you big bully,” while McEnroe was just trying to answer a question.
This is sooo fake and planned by both McEnroe and Williams.
All this does is bring attention to the U.S. Open in Tennis that scheduled for late August.
Their viewership numbers must be down and this controversy would give it the boost they need to get that Advertising revenue numbers up.
This controversy of men vs women in sports should just go away because everyone who espouses it is after recognition.
Women and men should compete against their own gender and males (mediocre males) saying they feel they’re really females and competing against good female athletes and winning are just four flushers.
So she’s engaged to a billionaire & having a baby AND still male?
I mean, I did see the video claiming they are male, and I am no fan of theirs.
So is s/he wearing PG pillows?
I imagine if she “self-identifies” as a man trapped in a manly woman’s body, she could try out for the men’s league.

Much of John’s “fame” comes from how big a jerk he has always been.
billie jean king vs bobby riggs, as I recall riggs had to defend the doubles outside lines and king the inside singles line.
please correct me if I am wrong, but as I recall this was the double standard that was employed for this match.
The greatest female sports performance I have ever seen was Jackie Joyner Kersee long jumping over 24 feet. That would win most men’s college meets.
On the other hand the men’s record is something like 31 feet. The long jump is one of those events where there are very few in the really top tier.
It is also widely believed that she was on steroids.
Just in case there are people who actually don’t know, Riggs easily beat women who were better than BJK at that time. He took a dive. Yes, the media was playing you way back then.
McEnroe was a brat but watching him and Borg play, he was one of the best ever.
In his day he would have beaten either of the Williams Sisters 6-0, 6-0 6-0.
Maybe Serena should try to play one of the top men’s players just to see what happens. :D
That would be something to watch.. I don’t even like tennis but I might watch that if it was free.. None of the pay per view..
They are pushing this.. Some are trying to get women into the NFL and NBA.. and Pro Baseball..
Yes, Riggs beat Margaret Court who was ranked No. 1 at the time. He beat her easily too.
There is no way Billie Jean King would have challenged him unless she knew she would have the game handed to her. The fact that the game was played was enough to know it was rigged.
But that is not a fair comparison. Males are physically stronger due to 2 million years of evolution where they had to protect mothers of their children.
Note that more women graduate from colleges now-a-days than men.
