Known for its paddle-shaped tail and friendly, toothy face, the beaver is a living, gnawing symbol of Canada's industrious spirit.

But don't be fooled by the cute and furry appearance. The big rodents can be dam ferocious.

Beaver attacks are on the rise in Edmonton. In the past month, several people have reported that their dogs have been attacked at the Terwillegar off-leash park.

Some pets have suffered serious injuries, and people are being encouraged to keep their dogs out of the water.

I once dated a girl named Beaver. I kept telling her “Don’t attack - until everyone leaves the party”. Wanna see my scars?

Singing “Oh What a Night”.

A few years ago... a guy was out fishing with his buddies. They saw a beaver and he decided to get a photo. The beaver turned and charged him and bit him in the thigh. It nicked his femoral artery. He and his friends were unable to stop the bleeding so he didn’t make it.

I’ve treated about six dogs that were bitten by a beaver. Only one survived the trip to the clinic before it bled out and that was only because the owner got pressure on the carotid artery and jugular vein before transport. The beaver can slash the carotids and jugulars in one quick bite.

I’ve heard of some snapping beavers that were as bad as snapping turtles.

Now that you brought up cougars, I keep getting ‘ads’ trying to introduce me to MILFs** and Cougars.

My only question is..

Understanding that a MILF** can be whatever age one wants her to be.

That said, at 78, just how old does a lady have to be for me to officially recognize her as a Cougar?

**Don’t ask. That is definitely one of those:

Having come across a beaver skull years ago I'm not surprised. Amazing tooth array.

Those chisel like incisors are firmly and deeply set into the skull and mandible with only about a quarter exposed. Amazing deep roots with marked curvature.
