Live Asian carp caught 9 miles from Lake Michigan

CHICAGO, IL -- An adult live Asian carp was caught about 9 miles from Lake Michigan this week, far north of the leading edge of the invasive fish population in the Illinois River and upstream of an electric barrier designed to keep them from the Great Lakes.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Asian carp biologist Kevin Irons said the 8-pound, 22-inch silver carp was caught by commercial fishermen in a regular carp monitoring spot on the Little Calumet River about two miles below the T. J. O'Brien Lock and Dam.

It's the second time an adult Asian carp has been caught north of the barriers. A bighead carp was caught in Lake Calumet in 2010.

The fish was caught in a gill net about 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 22 in a marina that carp control agencies monitor because it has the right habitat for Asian carp, Irons said.

This is a day old & I didn't find this posted.

Sure enough, reading near the end we find: In February, the Trump administration delayed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan release, saying it wanted to examine the issue after downstream barge owners complained about possible hindrance to shipping. Earlier this week, a sizable number of Great Lakes delegates in Congress introduced bipartisan legislation that would force the White House to release the plan.

Should have known, its Trump's fault.

WHAT? We can’t even keep invasive FISH out of our waterways - so what makes anyone THINK that Mother Government can protect us from Islamic INVADERS? ;)

And now back to your regularly scheduled post...

Who runs the state of IL?

Has IL devoted funding (ROFL) to stopping the carp from advancing towards Lake Michigan?

Have they eliminated or contained the carp that is within their state boundaries at all?

Nah. My guess is that somebody affiliated with one of the national envirowacko groups "caught" this carp close to the lakeshore, so pre-printed signs depicting Trump as Hitler can be generated and waiting on Soros' check clearing the bank so rent-a-mob activists can be paid to march in the streets demanding Trump's impeachment and accusing Republicans of poisoning the Great Lakes.

They'll make sure that this fish gets into the lake now if they think it will hurt Trump. Outside of that, it takes boating up another notch.

LOL.

Seriously, though, if you think about it, they both have a tendency to breed prolifically; perhaps their young stand a better chance because they are no longer prey, cannot integrate with their natural environment (they often kill native species because they have no natural predators, a phenomenon known as political correctness in the human world), and, with enough time, tend to dominate and take over the natural flora and fauna of the place.

As for flora, kudzu in the South is one example; it was brought to Georgia from Asia and is now everywhere, blocking sunlight for native plants, etc.

As for fauna, check out this monster “fish” that has invaded the U.S. (quote from io9 article on invasive non-native species):

“The snakehead is an absolutely nightmarish animal. In fact, National Geographic went so far as to nickname the Northern Snakehead “Fishzilla,” and with good reason. Snakehead fish are a veritable force of nature — they have sharp, shark-like teeth; an appetite for blood; can grow to over three feet in length; can lay up to 75,000 eggs a year; and can even breathe and migrate on land, searching for other bodies of water for up to four days at a time through the use of a primitive breathing organ.

“While they were originally native to East Asian waters, various species of snakehead have decimated native food chains in the US ranging from Maine to California. “

Diana, I think your analogy is actually quite apt.

I used to be a typist for the Army Corps of Engineers, back when typists existed. There are a lot of “stakeholders” in violent conflict around the Corps of Engineers.

Great minds think alike. I do know from past experience that ripe mulberries are a great carp bait, that and Wheaties mixed with some anise oil.

If Asian Carp can live in the Little Cal, they can live anywhere. The Little Cal is basically an open sewer for the heavy industries on the South side of Chicago and NW Indiana!

I use the end of the pragmatis weed to catch the Asian grass carp variety. Great tasting fish.

I should invest in a large fishing fleet and some planes to export the fish to Asia.

They’re just coming here to do the jobs American carp won’t do.

Great map - I remember the towns on the Little Cal hiring crews to haul out the tires and garbage that had filled up the river bottom. Had some very bad floods in the area from the Little Cal. The Grand Calumet River has been dead since the 1920’s.

If you figure out how to keep them out of the big lake, you get $1,000,000

I hate those stinking Kudzu vines that are killing off our trees, too.

I hate the Chinese Silvergrass that has invaded our fields.

Made in China.
