An odd thing began happening to my wife a few weeks ago. She was trying to hook up to our home wi-fi system and there was an available network called "FBI camera". I blew it off and told her it was probably one she accidentally saved while at a starbucks or something and someone was just using a "creative name" for their hotspot. The reason I believed that is that our home is several hundred yards from the nearest neighbor, and most of them don't have computers.
Here is the weird part: I'm working from home today and when I tried to log on to my hotspot with my work computer, "FBI camera" was on the list of available networks with two bars of signal. It comes and goes.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but how could there be anything like that being picked up out here in the middle of nowhere? We are surrounded by about six acres of field and that is surrounded by about 100 foot thick forest all around.
Anybody have an idea?
+1
And perhaps, someone savvy enough to turn the radio gain up so it travels further.
I’m disappointed I don’t rate. All I see is DavesBookCase, HomeSweetHome, and Snoopy.
The worst I saw was at a science-fiction convention some years ago. Someone thought they were being very cute when they named their mobile hotspot "HITLER DID NOTHING WRONG".
You are right. A real FBI network would be named “ThisIsNOTanFBIcamera”
Anyone with an ounce of brains would tell the system(router) not to display the SSID, and therefore would be invisible if they were interested in true anonymity.
My AP is set to not display the SSID. I prefer it that way.
see eagleone’s post....someone’s having fun
Fire up Linux and Hack in to it, see what is there.
Was it this one?
There have been multiple posts where people use “FBI Surveillance Van #3” to screw with their neighbors. Suggest you change yours to something similar.
Ditto on “Surveillance Van” at my house....red
I’d wager that it was a neighbor having some fun.
I have a little fun with my router, during the election season, I changed my broadcast network name to HillaryForPrison, HillarySucks and such nonsense.
Holy cow - I just clicked on it... and I’m seeing the inside of YOUR house!
Our local bank uses “FBI” in the name of their equipment. Also may be a brinks truck. Someone told me they did too on dash camera
If you search for networks here at work, you see one called “Trojan Worm”, and “Virus”. Geek humor. Whatchagonnado?
I hadn’t thought about a “game camera”, in the woods, as one poster suggested, but that sounds like a good explanation. You can see WIFI printers listed with networks. I bet cameras are the same way.
Download WiFi analyzer for your phone. You will easily be able to track it down.
Sweet H3
It is definitely NOT for the WiFi drone that ISN’T hovering overhead, because there is NO drone. Got it?
I live in a subdivision that is a dead end road with about 40 houses. I have seen a secured wifi connection FBI surveillance van several times in the past three years. I don’t know who in our neighborhood would name something that.
It makes one wonder!
