Actor Stephen Furst, best known for his performances as the hapless Flounder in Animal House and put-upon rookie doc Eliott Axelrod on St. Elsewhere, died yesterday at his home in Moorpark, California, near Los Angeles, due to complications from diabetes.
His death was announced by his sons Nathan and Griffith Furst, who asked that fans celebrate his life by watching one of his movies or use one of his bits to make someone else laugh really, really hard. See their entire statement below.

Years back when the B5 people were making the rounds, he was there at least one of them.
We went to a panel that had him on it.
RIP Abrahamo Lincolni.
Legacies get in automatically..
From IMDB:
In the movie Animal House (1978), his wife Lorraine Furst did a cameo as the girl he asked for the marbles.
I noticed he said both of his parents died when they were 47 of [among other things] diabetes.
And that the was a diabetic at 17.
From IMDB:
Furst publicly credits J. Michael Straczynski’s show “Babylon-5” with saving his life, because he is a longtime diabetic whose kidneys failed midway through the show. A fan who loved his portrayal of ‘Vir’ heard of his health problems and donated a kidney to save him from dialysis and a likely early demise.
Never had to read for the part of “Vir” in Babylon 5 (1994). When he went to the audition, he saw that the other actors had their hair done in the Centauri crest, while he didn’t. A trip to the bathroom to raid the soap dispenser and plaster his hair up ended disastrously with his hair askew and tears running down his face where the soap had gotten in his eyes. When he was called in, he entered apologizing profusely in run-on sentences for his appearance, whereupon the creator and producers looked at each other and said, “Oh my God! It’s Vir!” He asked if they wanted him to read and they said no, he had the part.
Sic Transit Vir.
Personal opinion -
Stephen Furst as Vir and Bill Mumy as Lenier were the two best acting jobs in a B5 Universe that was filled with superb actors.
Both of them managed to portray the books that belied their covers - and made these unbelievable characters totally believable.
No studio would have the nerve to make that movie today.
That's how I remember him. He was so funny in that role. Sorry to see him pass.
” Bill Mumy as Lenier”....
And Kosh.
Was memorable as the computer geek in “Jurassic Park” who stole the dinosaur DNA and got eaten by the small dinosaurs when he ran off the road in a storm.
Rest in Peace Guy. I loved your work!

Wasn’t that Wayne Knight from “Seinfeld” (Newman) and the cop on “Third Rock from the Sun?”
Aww, not Flounder. RIP.
A legacy from Harrisburg.
So sad.
Rest in Peace, Kent Dorfmann.
Wrong guy...that was NEWMAN!
My bad. Right.
