There were few signs that a major blockbuster was about to premiere when The Mummy rolled into Manhattan last week. The marquee of the AMC Loews Lincoln Square Theatres had gone blank. The carpet was totally covered with black plastic. Security only let guests past barricades after quizzing them about what they were there to see, and everybody had to walk through two imposing metal detectors.
Inside the theater, Tom Cruise was jubilant, as he stood in front of the crowd. Hey yall, said the 54-year-old actor. He introduced Alex Kurtzman, the films director, as well as the cast members, who stood quietly as Cruise delivered a 10-minute improvised speech. Movies arent made by single people, he said. Its a team effort.

Cruise did an OK job in that film, with the help of the late, great Bill Paxton.
BUT that movie belonged to the inimitable Emily Blunt ....

I don’t go to the movies any more. Whatever may be to my tastes will get to me sooner or later.
Though basically, eff Hollywood.

Exept for Collateral, which I’d list as one of Cruises best movies even if I didn’t totally worship at the Michael Mann alter.

Another Tom Cruise movie that was greatly enriched by the female lead, IMHO....

“I liked him in that movie...plus I liked him in Oblivion as well.”
Agree. I thought both were very entertaining sci fi.

I wonder if they need any extras. I assume some of the filming will be in my backyard.

The biggest problem with any and all Tom Cruz flicks is well, Tom Cruz.

Marvel put in the work to build their universe. The others want it to just happen overnight.

And the biggest thing really is Marvel made a good movie and added a couple of hooks they could build on if it worked. They wanted that universe but they knew step one was the first movie needed to be successful financially and critically. Everybody else seems to be trying to make a universe first. We see the same thing happening in TV where folks hoping to make their show prestige are building this great 5 year arc but are totally forgetting that the first episode needs to entertain, and then the second, etc etc until you eventually have a good season. “Man we’ve got some great stuff planned for season 3” does you know good if the first 4 episodes are boring and you get canceled.
