She struck the ball perfectly, sending it sailing end over end into the red-orange sky. It floated between the posts. And so began the kicking career of Longo, a woman unlike anyone in the history of football.
All that for an extra point! A 200,000 word article about a gal who can kick extra points and an occasional 45 yard field goal playing for Div II, trying to make her out to be the second coming of Mark Mosely . . . sheesh!
In before the Tony Romo jokes.
Lars must get payed by the word.
I saw the results of U.S. Air Force tests many years ago. They were to determine the average strength of males and females.
The differences were astonishing. Something like half as strong as guys with one exception. Girls had 90% of the leg strength as guys who weighed the same.
No reason a girl could not be a place kicker or short field goal kicker.
No other position even remotely possible.
Comments disabled at the article web site. Hmmm wonder why?
lol
It doesn’t go far enough! When will we see handicapped or differently abled people in the NFL? They are so discriminatory. In fact, the whole thing is too dang speciest to me. They need to allow animals to play in the NFL (cue the picture of Vick being attacked by a dog).
Haha call me when Alabama signs its first woman player.
In the NFL her career would be extinguished with a blown field goal snap and the ball ends up in her hands.
The best college place kicker I ever saw was a woman. She was the soccer goalie one year and switched to football the next. That girl had an incredidle leg.
If she can kick as good as the others, then she can play. Simple as that. Of course, she would probably have to deal with running, tackling, and being tackled.
It’s a cool story. I was in AZ during the Basha’s reign and understand what he did for all athletes. Arizona is a tough environment. I applaud her perseverance to succeed.
Does this mean they’re going to have to install Tampon machines in the locker room?
If it happens, it figures the first female NFL player would be a place kicker. That way she can’t be hit.
I am all for her playing in the womens nfl.
More power to her. But kicking in college and the NFL are orders of magnitude different. If she’s good enough, and doesn’t get hired because of affirmative action, I will wish her well.
The writer wins the “Drama Queen of the Year” Award as well as the “Hyperbole Extraordinaire” award.
“re “her legs trembling, ...”
Who did the writer thing Longo was, the subject of a Chris Matthews tongue-licking?
A pandering stunt, perhaps. Now that, I can see. Losing a contest, but trying to put bottoms in seats with a gimmick has been done before and will be done again.
In professional sports, where money counts, women cannot compete against men, on the basis of performance, period.
When athletes reach the top of the physical pyramid, very small differences separate them. In marathons, the first woman finishes 15 minutes behind the first man. That entire 15 minutes is filled with men crossing the finish line before she does.
Women have the will and capability to compete in physical sports against other women professionally, and that is a good thing, but no matter the will, in a professional setting, that will and capability cannot overcome the innate physical advantages nature has bestowed on men with equal will and commensurate advantages physically.
So many people with so many agendas desperately want women to be able to compete against men, but in the non-Hollywood world, it is an abject fantasy. A woman at the top of her pyramid (and to get there, she has to train harder and longer than a male, comparatively speaking, because her biology works against her during those years of prime physical conditioning) cannot compete against a male at the top of his physical pyramid. The male has natural steroids that a woman does not, and the hardwiring of biology is different.
This graph explains the difference, and it has been derived from accepted medical knowledge:
People read these comments and think I am denigrating women, or lack respect for them. Neither is true. These are just facts. Women have plenty of guts, but at the top of the pyramid, everyone has guts, and a percent or even a fraction of a percent of difference makes ALL the difference between the male at the top, and the male ten places behind. Never mind the 25% difference between a top trained male and a top trained female.
