‘Batman’ star Adam West dies at 88

Adam West — an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series “Batman” — died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88. A rep said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

With its “Wham! Pow!” onscreen exclamations, flamboyant villains and cheeky tone, “Batman” became a surprise hit with its premiere on ABC in 1966, a virtual symbol of ’60s kitsch. Yet West’s portrayal of the superhero and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, ultimately made it hard for him to get other roles, and while he continued to work throughout his career, options remained limited because of his association with the character.

Loved this show. The first custom car show I ever went to, at the Westchester Cty Center in White Plains, NY had the Batmobile on display. RIP, Mr. West.

Eternal Rest Grant unto Adam O Lord

and may perpetual light shine upon him

may his soul and all the souls

of the faithfully departed

through the Mercy of God

rest in peace.

God Speed, to that great Bat Signal in the Sky, Adam!

I remember walking home in Isla Vista, Cal (the off-campus area of UCSB) and hearing the Batman theme coming from dozens of houses/apartments. Yes, you really did have to be there to really get it.

Wanted to hear Adam West sing,

“Nana nana nana nana
Nana nana nana nana,
Me!”

I remember as a little boy I rigged a rope to the second story of my granddad’s house and Was very surprised that I couldn’t just walk up the wall from the backyard to my bedroom window.

Batman was originally created to be violent and graphic. In fact, he’s the first anti-hero ever created.
Even the Tim Burton movies were far too campy. It was only until the reboot in 2005 that did the character justice.

Batman was never meant to be campy.

Iconic part of my childhood. Back when the 89 movie came out, I started watching the old TV show (which I didn’t know existed) on the old Family Chanel religiously after school.

West made batman a hero and role model instead of someone with a serious mental illness and anger issues.

We are almost down to Mr. T as the only real good example for kids these days.

Sorry to hear this.

Just a few days ago, I was watching episodes of Batman the TV series on “the Daily Binge” that was airing on the “Decades” channel.

This entire month they are showing TV shows that aired fifty years ago, in 1967.

The last time I saw Adam West on TV in a recent series, he was playing himself on an episode of “The Big Bang Theory.” A birthday party was thrown for Sheldon, and his friends hired Adam West to appear (as himself) at the party in the apartment.

Adam West:Oh, if you're gonna factor in a sense of humor, then I should be at the top of the list. It should be me, Keaton, Kilmer, Lego, Bale, and that pretty boy Clooney.
Howard: Really? You're ahead of Bale? The man who personified the words, (deep voice): “I'm Batman.” Leonard: I'm sold-- you're ahead of Bale.
Adam West: There's another reason I should be higher on the list. All those other guys had muscles built into their costumes. All I had in my Batsuit was 100%, grade-A West.

-- The Big Bang Theory

RIP - I loved that show when I was a kid.

There is a very interesting documentary about him, find it on cable. Batman made his career and ruined his career, and he was a real character.

“You had to be there in the 1960s to get it.”

I was around in the 60s and I didn’t get it.

In 1966 this scene of leaving the batcave was impressive to this 9 year old.
