PENTAGON — The armed, pro-regime drone shot down by U.S. aircraft Thursday after it fired upon U.S.-led coalition members on patrol in southern Syria was Iranian-made, officials tell VOA.
Officials said a U.S. F-15 fighter jet took down the Shahed-129 drone, which can be used for combat and reconnaissance missions.
Thursday's strike marked the first time the U.S. military had shot down an enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat since February 25, 2009, when an Iranian drone was brought down over Iraq, Central Command spokesman Major Josh Jacques told VOA Friday.
It was also the first time that pro-regime forces had tried to strike coalition forces in the area surrounding al-Tanf, an army base where members of the coalition are training Syrians to fight the Islamic State militant group, according to U.S.-led coalition spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon.
Russian action
Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the area around the base was largely "calm" Friday, thanks to Russia's relaying of messages from an established U.S.-Russian communication line down to the fighters near al-Tanf.

We have a screwed up fantasy that the only bad guys in Syria are isis and Syrian military trying to save their country. Too bad trump is buying into the neocon plan. We are going after isis, and trying to continue a war against Assad.
This is the equivalent of a cop jumping in front of a rolling get away car, then opening fire, claiming they were going to run over him.

Iran was able to develop such a drone? That’s pretty high tech. It’s as though we must have given them one to reverse engineer! ...oh wait...
I’m still angry about the “crash landing” of our drone in Iran. Obama is a traitor. If one can’t see how he’s helped them at every level they’re blind. He might as well have put it in a box and shipped it directly to the Ayatollah, along with the billions he gave them. Heck, why not just give them a nuke or two at the same time?
The question that’s never been answered is why we ever got into Syria to begin with. It’s a sovereign country with a legally elected President.
