I would personally like to thank those brave souls who challenged the Nazis on the beaches of Normandy and who landed behind the lines in gliders and upon parachutes to secure the beachhead so that the Allies could start their campaign towards Germany in defeat of the Nazi war machine. Many of these men were killed this day in action and are often forgotten as time progresses further away from that day in June of 1944. Thank you to those veterans who are still with us who made that landing or dropped from the air. and those in support of that effort on this day in 1944. They are truly Heroes and the embodiment of the American Spirit. God bless you all. God bless.
My dad was there on an LST ship. He told us kids, “If you’re weren’t scared, you weren’t there.” Good wishes to all the D-Day vets we remember today.
To this day, there is no exact count of how many men died on D-Day. It was such a chaotic bloodbath that it was impossible to even attempt to make accurate records until days later, when more men had died and gone missing and been wounded in further combat actions.
Amen.
Not to denigrate the men but it is pretty hard to run to the rear in an LST...
I echo your sentiments.
I talked to a WWII vet who said he was told the same thing, and in the innocence of indestructible youth, he and the others looked at each other and said "You poor bastard".
[sidebar] I'm reading "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose (again) this week and decided to fly the flag today.
