No big deal. It’s his show and he’s edgy.

When leftist comedians are crude, vulgar, and tasteless, it's always explained away as being "edgy" and "groundbreaking."

I thought the thread was generated because he called Obama a nigger

It’s ok...Hannity will spend all next week defending Bill Maher! Found it odd last night that Hannity ripped on Anderson Cooper for distancing himself from Kathy Griffin.

Maybe because he knows Anderson agrees with Kathy and is just doing it to save his career.

He said “nigga”, he didn’t say “N Word”. N Word isn’t a word, it’s two words.

Bill Maher is something I scrape off my shoe after walking in the dog park, yet in this case, no foul. It was a “joke”. Funny and true. Legitimate use of the language. I’m willing to bet that AAs across America laughed their A$$ES off.

Maher didn’t threaten anyone. It was an offhand quip, and one that folks — black and white — used to laugh at. It’s almost impossible to be a funny comedian these days. I’m reminded of this:

Across the United States, high-profile comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Larry the Cable Guy and Chris Rock have said they are avoiding campuses because of student hypersensitivity. “I don’t play colleges, but I hear a lot of people tell me, ‘They’re so PC,’” Seinfeld famously told ESPN’s Colin Cowherd in June. “[Young people] just want to use these words: ‘That’s racist;’ ‘That’s sexist;’ ‘That’s prejudice.’ … They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.” — The Wrap, August 23, 2015

So what? Obama said nigger on national TV. It’s perfectly okay to use the word now. Obama removed the racial connotation from the word nigger

It’s a good thing Paula Deen didn’t say that!

See I disagree. The F bomb is vulgar. Even the S word is vulgar. But the N-word? Not so much. It’s not even a racist term, as blacks use it all the time. It’s more of an insult.

A word by itself can have a deragatory conotation. But it only becomes an insult when used as an insult. The n word is both deragatory and vulgar. The word fool, by contrast is detagatory but not vulgar. One might say “a fool and his money are soon parted” which would not be offensive as either insulting or vulgar (unless the speaker was alluding to a particular person who just lost money). But obviously the word fool can and often is used as an insult. But we never call it the f-word...not only because there is already an f-word, but also because, unlike the n-word, it is not shocking to polite sensibilties. But in some society neither the n-word nor f-word seem shocking...standards of vulgarity being audience dependent.

True. And those standards are dropping like flies every day.

(sigh)

And those standards are dropping like flies every day.

If you mean there is a lowering of the standard of showing respect for others by avoiding vulgarity I agree with you. But what I meant by audience dependent was the standard of what is actually vulgar and how vulgar, and that has to do with social setting, and thus for an individual spending time in one society and then another it may fluctuate up and down.

For example, sailors may cuss freely out at sea without anyone's sensibilities being shocked at all. But take those sailors and put them at a formal setting at table with the Queen of England, and they will realize they ought to change their language--although they might inadvertently fail to do so because of habit.

That is not the damned point. It’s about WHO gets to use that term for laughs/point making, and WHO does not.

Why did the moron go on that show anyway? Oh, I guess to start portraying himself as the young, cool alternative to Trump. Good luck with that, husker.
