The Deep Meaning Behind Ivanka Trump's Hat in Israel
Yahoo Style ^ | 5/22/2017 | Tanya Edwards

Joining her father President Donald Trump on his trip through the Middle East, Ivanka Trump has dressed more modestly than usual, and that streak has continued during their visit to Israel.

The first daughter was photographed wearing a rarely seen accessory (at least on her): a hat. She wore the small navy hat perched on one side on her head, with a headband securing the velvet topper. Her hair was styled in a soft chignon at the nape of her neck.

Hats are worn by Orthodox Jewish women following the concept of Tzniut, which is Hebrew for modesty or humility in both dress and behavior. Orthodox women will opt for loose clothing in muted colors that do not draw attention, long-sleeve tops, skirts long enough to cover the knee while sitting and close-toed shoes. And in some traditional communities, women will wear a hat after marriage, especially at a synagogue or Holy site.

The Western Wall, which Ivanka visited today, is Judaism’s holiest prayer site.

The rest of her look was also more modest than what’s typically seen from Ivanka, who converted to Judaism in 2009 before marrying husband Jared Kushner.

No.

I watched Srugim because I was interested in seeing a different way of life and read a blog from Jews who posted on every episode...including what they wore, protocol..etc.

You are making my point.

It seems contrived. Image Conscious. Camera Conscious.

At least if she is going to do it she should do it the full time she is there.

Wearing or not wearing a head covering is a CHOICE..and while making that choice in the life of an Orthodox Jew.. some struggle as they make it.. But it is a choice when it comes to Orthodox Jews depending on a variety of factors.

Obviously she doesnt do it anywhere else.

Btw, the Rabbi that is getting the blame for giving them an exemption on travel felt it necessary to come out and say it was fake news. He didn’t give it to them. Not sure why he felt that was necessary.

Contrived and pretentious. I personally think that girl is a little too attention needy. Its getting tedious. Whether its deliberate or not the girl is upstaging Melania. I don’t get it that Ivanka has to be dragged everywhere Trump goes. What happened to she and Don Jr and Eric were going to run the company? You don’t see Don Jr and Eric on official visits.

I believe she is if the modern orthodox sect.

I don’t keep track of anyone else’s religious practices. I don’t read gossip and rumor. I don’t follow ivanka Trump.

From what I have just read about the modern orthodox movement there is a wide variety of acceptable practices. Many do not cover except for Shabbat. Men and women shake hands and work together. The practices that seem to be consistent are keeping kosher and observing the sabbath

There’s a lot of jealousy surrounding Ivanka among some women on FR. They analysis whether her nose is fixed and now are trying to be experts on Judaism and/or seeing messages in her head wear. As someone who has lived among Jews my entire life, had a Jewish grandfather, I can tell you there are different versions of Judaism in the USA and how it is practiced. And some people mix and match. My best friend is non-Kosher put wouldn’t dare eat a meat-based lasagna and always sneers when I chow down on one!

I believe that’s correct. She’s “modern orthodox”. I’m not entirely clear about how that breaks down but it sounds like it’s probably keeps more strictly to the codes than “Conservative”, but not as inflexible as the various (regular?) orthodox to ultra-orthodox variants out there.

You’re welcome. Some folks here need to move on from Ivanka’s fashion choices.

That is what I took away from my reading.

I just find all of this personal stuff to be pointless and unbecoming

Rashi was our great teacher. His daughters laid Tefillin. There should be a distinct difference, but women should be able to engage the mitzvos if Torah does not prohibit their observance by females.
