'Star Trek: Discovery': Decoding the 1st Trailer of Trek's New Chapter

The first full trailer for "Star Trek: Discovery" hints at a complicated past for one of its main characters, while bringing in famous alien species such as the Vulcans and the Klingons.

"Discovery" is set about 10 years before the original "Star Trek" series that featured Capt. James T. Kirk, Science Officer Spock and other memorable characters.

As such, the trailer focuses heavily on Spock's father, Sarek (played by James Frain). You can see more series here from our sister site Newsarama. But let's take a close look at our first glimpse of Trek's new chapter to see what's in store fans in the final frontier. -SNIP-

I was a Junior in college when "Star Trek" started and already a Sci-Fi fan for better than 10 years.

Really enjoyed "The Original Series" and still like to go back and watch favorites. I came to enjoy "The Next Generation" after they go it together past that terrible first season. "Deep Space" had a darker tone and I enjoyed it also. "Voyager" gave us a female Captain that had bigger gonads than even Kirk's and then they added Seven of Nine whose impressive pair was above the waist.

The "Enterprise" almost drove me away when Captain Jonathan Archer was a big, big fan of water polo!

And the films started off badly with The Motion Picture that was as flat as could be but came roaring back with Khan only to peter out by 1991's Number VI The Undiscovered Country. "The Next Generation" came back to finally kill Kirk off in 1994's Generations, hitting a homerun with 1996's kick-ass First Contact, a decent one in 1998's Insurrection and ending on 2002's Nemesis which I did not see so bad as to keel the series.

So, now we have "Discovery" that takes place10 years before Kirk, Spock and Bones but the trailer shows a Starfleet was more modern looking than it shoud be, especially the uniforms. I must say I found the trailer of Seth MacFarlane's upcoming new science fiction TV series "The Orville" having a more 'Star Trek' look than "Discovery."

Therefore, while I will turn in to the newest Star Trek series, I am not... getting my hopes up as the present PC media culture will likely make me throw up a little in my mouth watching it--

The new series has a gay science officer and Paramount/CBS has gone out of their way to hammer it into our heads that this Star Trek show has a GAY SCIENCE OFFICER.

Not watching it. Star Trek is dead. The 23rd century has become more of a communist reeducation camp than boldly going where no person of indeterminate gender has gone before.

I grew to like a lot of DS9. It had some very good story lines and was able to develop many characters.

All the Borg episodes, regardless of series, are some of my favorites, as well as anything with “Q.”

I’ll watch anything that’s Star Trek and try to ignore the junk that gets thrown in the new iterations.

Perfect example of a writer and their “attention to detail...”

If Sarek was talking to Burnham when he made the comment about the human tongue: Who was the little kid?

Yep. All enjoyable hour-long escape mechanisms. Nothing wrong with that...

Re Ciaphas Cain's: --gone out of their way to hammer it into our heads that this Star Trek show has a GAY SCIENCE OFFICER--

& Telepathic Intruder's: The 23rd century has become more of a communist reeducation camp than boldly going where no person of indeterminate gender has gone before.

As long as they spay and neuter all the dogs and cats, it is Jake with me--

Perhaps we need to spay and neuter... all the Science Officers.

Yeah, Spock-- The party's... over!

And about... damn time!

What’s up with the two captains? Or is that a couple that’s watching the pilot?

I agree 100%. Also the episodes featuring Seven of Nine, or do those count as Borg episodes?

I’d prefer the new voyages reboot of classic Trek.

All the ones that I have seen are really good.

I wonder what branch of science describes gender as being indeterminate, or homosexuality as natural.

Mixing science with politics is just bad science. Politics is driven by groupthink, science by skepticism and impartiality. The two don’t mix.

There won’t be any homos in the future. It will be cured by gay scientists.

An Asian woman as captain. How cliche! Unless she’s a lesbian - now we’re scratching the envelope!

This will suck bigly.

The only reason DS9 was any good was because they ripped off Babylon 5. Sisko was great, though. 2nd only to Kirk as Captains.

Might be good. Voyager became unwatchable, Two of Two notwithstanding. Big fan of James Frain.
