Microsoft's Surface Laptop is aimed at supplanting the MacBook Air as a college-student favorite. The svelte, stylish clamshell also fills a middle ground between its cousins, the Surface Pro 4 tablet and Surface Book powerhouse 2-in-1, providing a third option that could appeal to many regular consumers.
We went hands-on with the Surface Laptop last week and plan to test it in advance of its June launch. Until then, if you're trying to decide between the Surface Pro 4's promise of a tablet that can be a full-fledged computer, and the Surface Laptop's full-fledged computer that's nearly as light (and a lot newer), lets dig into the specs.

Bkmrk Thank you!
I have an i7 SPro 3 with the detachable keyboard. Seems preferable to the fixed keyboard in the new Surface Laptop.

The Surface Laptop is $600+ more then my new ASUS laptop.
I have 256gb ssd drive and i5 and 8gb ram and can add 32gb total and I was also able to add a 1tb hard drive in the extra drive bay. I have a dvd drive too. 1920 x 1080 screen resolution and 15.5” screen. Comfortable viewing. 3 usb ports.
The Surface Laptop has a touch screen. Higher resolution 2256 x 1504 (odd) Program buttons would be too small to use comfortably. 1 usb port, no dvd drive.
I am willing to save $600+ dollars.
Love my Surface tablet. I have an Ipad but rarely use it. I will definitely get another Surface product when the time comes.
That sounds ideal. What model ASUS do you have?
I have a expensive Asus laptop, it sits there collecting dust. Power adapter died and Asus does not sell a replacement. The resson they never made replacement power adapters available is, they knew they had a design problem but marketed and sold these laptops anyways. Crooks!
I bought 4 aftermarket power adapters including one that looks identical to the original Asus Power adapter. They either don’t work or in one case the mouse pointer jumps erratically all over the screen non stop making the laptop unusable.
Asus from day one of problem won’t help, they say yes we know there are design problems with power adapter, and power jack in laptop, we have no solution for you, thanks for your money now F off! They don’t have a replacement power adapter.
OK expensive lesson learned I will just get my data off the ssd drive and be done with it. NO that can’t be done, Asus has a proprietary connector on their ssd drive so data cannot be retrieved.
Also Asus power Jacks in their laptops are so prone to failure that there are businesses that exist just to replace power Jacks in Asus laptops.
Yes it looks like a sleek thin metal super-duper laptop with i7 processor and lots of ram...etc but it is a big dollar lightweight boat anchor. Also has poorly designed problematic track pad and lettering that soon disappears off non-backlit keys on keyboard.
I use to own a computer business and in the majority of the systems we built we used the top Asus motherboards. Back then Asus made high quality superior components and cheap crappy components you just had to know the difference. Today I wouldn’t use a Asus anything.
I do hope your Asus laptop remains problem free, and lives long and prospers.
VMI70, read my post #9 before buying an Asus laptop. There are numerous complaints on internet about Asus’s proprietary crap they make these days. I recommend you do your due diligence before buying. I am considering a Microsoft Surface and have heard MSI makes a few good laptops....I am still researching both.

Don’t know why they don’t add Bluetooth to the surface keyboard... there was a failed attempt w/ Surface 2/3 keyboard but the device never worked (battery fail).
I work w/ an HP X2 detachable. Beautiful machine: tablet on table, keyboard on my lap, and it all tucks away like a laptop when I’m done or traveling. Great product.
I have the SPro3, and the magnetic keyboard magically talks to the tablet. Never investigate how so.

Maybe the you described preceded my version.
Agreed, great product. My SPro3 is running a full version of Win10 Pro. It’s amazing. But still requires a remote cellular device — and that’s really not a problem. I have a jetpack, and if not that, my iPhone will hotspot.
Mine is a Surface 3 w/ LTE — MS & ATT only offered the basic Surface 3 w/ cellular, and I’m still mystified as to why, as the target audience is business which will pay for the better product - and wish the Surface 3 Pro had been offered w/ LTE...
I love the tablet, just wish it had native Bluetooth keyboard.
Wasn’t aware there were any Surfaces with cellular. Early on I would have preferred that feature, but I now have a JetPack (tiny cellular module) that “only” costs $10/month. And if the cellular service improves, I won’t need an upgrade to the Surface, just the JetPack.
MS offered a trade-up from Pro 3 to 4. My SP3 has an i7, 250 GB storage. So an upgrade to 4 was far from necessary.
The detachable keyboard works great. Never any problems. I also have the mouse that flattens to less than 1/2” thick. It’s pretty cool. Everything packs up to a small footprint for traveling. Feature-wise, my Surface is good for at least another 4 years.
I kept losing my jetpacks... so I really like having LTE embed in the device. It can also serve as hotspot. ATT tech tells me there’s no difference in speed from the tablet or a jetpack, but I’m rather certain it’s much faster than on my phone.
Learned the hard way, though, about cloud services: when I first used the LTE in the woods in Maine, it ran up 11g in two days from my OneDrive/SharePoint services -woops! I’ve been begging MS to put a global “off” button for cloud, as I have to turn them off separately now.
One other caveat for you: if you use any third party applications be careful w/ the Creators manual update — it broke my Outlook SMS (RedOxygen) and Bose SoundTouch 10. I do like some of the features on Creators, esp. the new Edge, so I’m just living w/ it until full launch.
Glad you’re enjoying your SP3! I could use the extra RAM and speed, but my S3 does exactly what I need.
