Could the press somehow construe this to imply that Trump was illegally recording Comey? Of course they could...and will. Whether it ever happened or if it did happen, whether or not it's illegal is immaterial. All that matters is throwing mud on the President.

No, I think the other way around, that Comey was illegally recording the President. Trump probably has evidence of such, but Comey had no chance to destroy them because SURPRISE he had no advance warning of firing.
