She was at a friend's house, visiting for a few days. She has had Alzheimer's for over 6 years. She has not had any health problems other than that, but she is over 80. Today she had the classic symptoms of stroke, paralysis and drooping on one side, slurred speech, confusion, so her friend called paramedics and she is now at a good hospital.
MRI has confirmed stroke. All her symptoms have gone, and she doesn't even remember why she is in the hospital or that she had a stroke. The doctors are still running tests. She is being given the usual blood thinner drugs etc.
I'd just like to hear a little about anyone's experience with strokes where the symptoms disappeared so fast, and how the next year/s went for them, and if anyone has experience with a loved one having a stroke while suffering dementia.
Thanks for any spare prayers, too. I feel much better tonight seeing the photos of her playing her favorite video game on her phone. Will be traveling down to see her tomorrow.
Need to stay on. No gay agenda here, just a tired typo, lol.
Prayers up for you my FRiend.
We went through all these things with my dear grandmother.
I still miss her so :-(
No one deserves to end their days suffering from this hideous malady.
God bless and keep you both.
I wonder if they will have the blood thinner plus the aspirin. Either one is fine. At this point it’s about giving her quality of life and comfort.
I’ve seen this before, many times. I’m an RN
So glad she does not have any residual results. Good thing there. Now they can prevent any more, and it doesn’t mean there will be more but look at it as a good thing. Now there can be no ‘ambush’.
Here’s some further information.

I don’t think her Dementia is leweys. That is the one with hallucinations. She has wild dreams and sometimes gets confused about dream vs awake, but never a hallucination. Yet. I’m sorry for what you went through. When he starting having the mini strokes, was that the beginning of the end?
She has some great docs and I will ask tomorrow about the carotid. Thanks.
Prayers up for your Mom, Yaelle.
Comfort and recovery.
Thank you, Berlin F. You have an excuse — was im Himmel are all these other people doing up on a work night? :). Gd bless.
Well THAT sounds good. Maybe your mother is one of the lucky ones who have few long term consequences. I know an elderly man like that. He had his stroke about a year ago, but he has resumed being his familiar cantankerous self.
Thanks for that positive report from the medical side. Going to look at your link now.
Yes, Moms was back to getting feisty and trying to refuse tests and drugs and get outa there... lol.
I admire your positive attitude Yaelle.
Best regards.
That is what I had. By the time I got to the hospital, I felt like a fool. I had numbness and some weird symptoms and could not remember some names. I was testing myself the whole way. It was fine when I got to the ER. A few years later, I had an MRI for something else and they could see the damage. Weird. My Mom had a stroke when she was 29 and everything was fine except she lost her hearing in one ear. I have had HBP since my 20’s so a stroke and/or TIA is not unexpected for me.
I think everyone’s experiences are different. Part of what makes it so scary.
Prayers up.
A Cardiac Arrhythmia or irregularity is known to increase the risk of stroke, so the doctor is probably trying to get specific observational data to decide what type of cardiac medications would be worth the side effects. I think his explanation about the “heart briefly stopping” was probably a simplification describing the type of arrhythmia he suspects increased your mother's chance of having a stroke. I don't know if he can say with certainty what actually caused the stroke as many factors were likely to have played a roll.
I’m sorry hon....she must be pretty cool if she bore you cause you’re bonafide in my book
My mom had a stroke in 2006....she calle me on the phone 350 miles away from our home at grandfather mountain saying she couldn’t get up and was slurring a bit
I told her to sit there and I called front gate and they rushed up to the top of the mountain with gear and called ambulance
Then EMS gave her a heparin drip immediately
At Watauga they gave her a heavier dose via arteriogram and blasted the clot
In 48 hours she was great except a bit weak
They suspected cardiac issues and sure enough she had a non emergency multiple bypass a few months later at St Thomas here in music city
It’s about severity in determining your route
If she is debilitated she’ll need a neurologist too
Indeed atrial flutter can cause clots and hence strokes
She’ll likely need plavix or the like forever and maybe a beta blocker
A holter monitor is a great idea
Cherish your time and be there
And always say good bye when you leave
Vanderbilt just had a study that 325 may be better actually
I’m in it.
Prayer’s lifted. How is your Mom with the Lord?
C18’
Great advice
Easy to do and fast
I bet they already did
I’ve had several
Every time I get an echocardiogram they look at my neck too
Prayers for you and your family.
TIA is what the docs call it when they don’t want to use the term stroke
