As if Lyme disease isn't troubling enough, a more serious tick-borne disease may be emerging, experts warn.
Powassan virus, which is a far rarer and more deadly pathogen than the bacterium that produces Lyme, is also transmitted by the deer tick. The virus can cause inflammation in the brain, which leads to death or permanent disability in 60 percent of cases.

Yikes.
So how do we kill the deer ticks?
“Looks like there is a more deadly emerging threat from ticks- 10% die from “
Statistics skewed by 2007 when there were 4 (half of total) deaths.
If the EPA allowed it, we could spray fog chemicals and kill them. They'd rather we all die to protect their environment.
So how do we kill the deer ticks?
5% Permethrin kills them when they get on treated clothing - supposedly after multiple laundry cycles
Amazon: Sawyer permethrin aerosol
Amazon: Sawyer permethrin pump
It definitely repels fleas for many days; it might be killing them :)
Pow Ass sounds AIDS related.
as a whole you mean? I don’t think there is a way to control them- lyme disease has been spreading rapidly the last few years- we haven’t found a way to control them yet- The problem is that mice carry the ticks- and there are vast numbers of mice- (be careful if you trap mice- wear gloves when removing- chec for ticks after doing so)-
Lyme disease truly is frightening- and this emerging threat powassan is as well- but for now hte biggest threat is lyme still- it will be very very rare still to get powassan- although like the article states- many more folks may have it and not be diagnosed- so the true numbers aren’t known really- docs usually aren’t aware of this threat really well when trying to diagnose someone who comes in with ‘flu like symptoms’
Last winter was an absolute banner year for mice too- there were loads of coyotes and owls seen during daylight hours- because there were so many mice and such large food source for the predators=-
If you are an outdoors person- make a habit of brushing off before you go inside- but hte problem is that deer ticks are very small, and the nymphs are really really small and still carry the virus- Very hard to spot-
Wow, so that is what is wrong with Northerners?
Shelter Island, NY has the highest rate of Lyme disease in the country and deer are so common there they might as well be squirrels. Since its an island you could kill all the deer and reduce Lyme disease to zero. God forbid you mention this in a mixed group, every women there will go for your throat. I don’t know why women have to be this way.
I tried to point out to a medical doctor I was talking to how many people had died due to banning DDT. Typical liberal. He said, “good.”. I have since read that view from liberal writers.
Somehow, liberals feel none of their espoused policies could ever impact them. Of course, wealthy people don’t mix much with the rest of us, so, perhaps they are correct.
i think the point of article is that many many more may be infected without knowing it- even severely affected without getting a proper diagnosis for what is wrong- There are likely a lot more cases today than in 2006 as the spread of lyme has really exploded since then as the winters have become milder and mice have been thriving and breeding in recent years more than ever- Hopefully we will see the pendulum swing back the other way soon- via more predators, perhaps a virus that thins out the mice population or something
;)
LOL, don't worry, you're fine you're find, everything is ok so e nfioe s.
well lyme is in ticks that are on mice too- you’d have to kill all the mice too- a typical mouse can have as many as 80 ticks on them at a time- mice are different than rodents like squirrels and chipmunks and mink and things because mice don’t groom themselves hardly at all- and don’t remove the ticks like other species do-
Spoke with a researcher once who was at a sportsman convention- they were studying mice- and he explained he wouldn’t go anywhere near a mouse without a full suit and respirator on (Due to possible hunta virus)
person in NYC was cleaning some mouse doo off his countertops, stirred up the droppings, and died of hunta virus-
Mice are nasty creatures-
Possums eat lots of ticks
Guinea Hens are a natural against ticks. One ugly little guinea hen will keep about an acre clear (from what I hear) and they will go after mice too.
There are about 21 or so of the worst diseases imaginable transmitted by ticks, the worst being Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever IMO.
These are some of the most vile critters imaginable outside of politicians.
They are all over the country and the woods, if you go there, they will find you.
Check yourself in a mirror and all over. If you find one embedded, remove it asap, and do not compress the abdomen, because that can cause them to regurgitate toxins into you.
Spraying and some controlled burns of some areas would help. I’ve picked many off of me in NE PA.
I always wear lightweight tactical pants that have been saturated with permethrin when hiking. No shorts for me.
If you’re able, chickens do a great job of keeping these and other pests out the yard.
How to keep ticks out of your yard:
Empty toilet paper tubes
Dryer lint.
Permethrin spray
Lay the lint out flat and carefully spray it with permethrin until is soaked. Allow to dry.
Push a quantity into the toilet paper tubes and distribute these around your yard. Critters will use the lint and tubes as nesting material killing the ticks.
Replace them every 60-70 days. Permethrin has a fairly short half life and is down to about 2% remaining after 75 days or so.
Best,
L
