S. RES. 135

Expressing support for the designation of May 1, 2017, as “Silver Star Service Banner Day”.

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES

April 24, 2017

Mr. Blunt (for himself and Mrs. McCaskill) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Armed Services

RESOLUTION

Expressing support for the designation of May 1, 2017, as “Silver Star Service Banner Day”.

Whereas the Senate has always honored the sacrifices made by the wounded and ill members of the Armed Forces;

Whereas the Silver Star Service Banner has come to represent the members of the Armed Forces and veterans who were wounded or became ill in combat in the wars fought by the United States;

Whereas the Silver Star Families of America was formed to help the people of the United States remember the sacrifices made by the wounded and ill members of the Armed Forces by designing and manufacturing Silver Star Service Banners and Silver Star Flags for that purpose;

Whereas the sole mission of the Silver Star Families of America is to evoke memories of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and veterans on behalf of the United States through the presence of a Silver Star Service Banner in a window or a Silver Star Flag flying;

Whereas the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and veterans on behalf of the United States should never be forgotten; and

Whereas May 1, 2017, is an appropriate date to designate as “Silver Star Service Banner Day”: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Senate—

(1) supports the designation of May 1, 2017, as “Silver Star Service Banner Day”; and

(2) calls upon the people of the United States to observe Silver Star Service Banner Day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt have introduced a bipartisan resolution to honor servicemembers who have been injured or become ill during their service.

The Senate resolution designates May 1, 2017, as “National Silver Star Service Banner Day” to recognize and thank servicemembers, veterans, and their families for their sacrifices.

“Silver Star Service Banner Day is an important opportunity to honor the men and women who have been injured while wearing the uniform and protecting this country,” said McCaskill, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee. “So many Missouri families are affected by the heroic sacrifices our servicemembers have made, and this resolution is a small gesture to recognize their brave service.”

Since 2011, the Missouri Senators have teamed up to support similar bipartisan resolutions, to encourage communities across the country to hold commemorative ceremonies and to honor the sacrifices made by injured troops and their families.

Silver Star Families of America (SSFoA) is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Clever, Mo., that honors and assists members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families from every branch of service and from all wars. SSFoA provides assistance to veterans who have suffered physical or emotional trauma in military service and distributes Silver Star Flags and care packages to wounded veterans and their families.

I guess this ship has sailed, but could they have picked a day other than the day that communists worldwide strut their stuff.

Too bad no one ever finds out about this stuff until it’s too late.

I found out a couple years ago that my great uncle, who died in WWII was awarded the Silver Star. I have no idea what it was for.

I think it was picked because it is the start of military appreciation month

Besides if we can steal their day so much the better!
