School is no place for books, one Manhattan principal apparently believes.
In a scene out of Fahrenheit 451, administrators at Life Sciences Secondary School have ordered all textbooks rounded up and removed calling them antiquated, sources say.
Principal Kim Swanson and Assistant Principal Derek Premo, who launched the ban, really frown upon the use of books, an insider told The Post

Parents, the time for pitchforks, tar, feathers and a fence rail is now. This idiot needs to be run out of town.
“Derek Premo”?
For some reason the complete, blatant stupidity of this story made me laugh.
When the school closes in a decade, who will they blame? Because we all know they wouldn’t dare admit they were the reason.
When books are outlawed, only outlaws will have books.
Or something.
“Last year, 5 percent of its 6th- to 8th-graders passed state math exams and 9 percent passed English far below the city average. At the high-school level, 82 percent graduated, but only 26 percent were deemed college-ready.”
Destroying incriminating evidence.
...and my wife will turn me in.
“You can’t have too many books!” I exclaim. Or I would if I wanted her to kill me, as she can no longer deal with the 4000 or so we have.
Well...they obviously didn’t use their textbooks...plus aren’t textbooks full of propaganda these days anyway?
I remember my college days when I had to pay over $500 just for books - per semester.
Textbooks is the biggest fraud facing education. Get rid of them and let students download textbooks on an Ipad or Kindle reading device. Also think of the money saved on health problems. I've known students who have back or wrist sprains from hauling around backpacks full of textbooks all day.
On the plus side when books are outlawed street gangs will make sure that they’re as cheap and easy to get as guns are now. /jab at obama
Is that his porn name?
Then they’ll hose you for software.
The very last thing we need or want is literate children and adults. It ruins everything when they can think for themselves!!! Vive le resistance!!!
Exactly. Burning most textbooks published in the last 50 years or so is doing a service to education.
You do need updates in science and history, but the best textbooks are from the early to mid 1800s.
Read, "Why Johnnie Can't Read", by Rudolph Flesch, from the 1950's or so.
Then read his sequel, from the 1970s or so, "Why Johnnie STILL Can't Read".
Great episode. Can’t believe how many of them had Burgess Meredith
When administrators try to eliminate books, they need to be sure that students truly have access to their instructional materials at home. That's not always so simple if they don't have the right technology available at home, or if there is shared custody and one parent lacks technology. Kids today all seem to have cell phones, but many of them don't have printers, and laptop access can be spotty. Laptop carts in the classroom aren't enough, especially in an AP class. There aren't enough classroom hours to cover the content and students need to do a lot of work at home. Perhaps these teachers have the kids do their labs at home and read at school . . .
There is a great deal of material that is not available on the Internet, and will never be available there. Some very important technical material such as engineering standards are available only when you cough up a wad of cash.
You’re giving me college textbook flashbacks. And it’s not pleasant! Pay an arm and a leg for ‘em and get pennies on the dollar back at the end of the semester. Lugging them round campus was like lugging a bag of bricks. If they can get class materials on a tablet or laptop, more power to ‘em. The college textbook racket is a scheme the mob looks on with jealousy.
