No more format wars!
I’m fine with a standard HDTV, as most people are.
These things just need more component hookups.
OLED is the new “thing”
I have a 2015 Sony 4k 49” Smart TV.... Love it and to be honest it’s overkill.

It’s a free country, and consumers can spend their money any way they wish and buy any consumer product they wish. It’s none of my business, and I certainly wouldn’t want government to tell anyone “how to live their life” and I wouldn’t take it upon myself to tell anyone “how to live their life”.
That being said, my personal opinion is that most people (myself included) have too much “stuff”. And usually too much debt — because buying all that “stuff” often costs more than you make.
Many people have turned themselves into slaves where they are tied to their jobs, bogged down by student loans, unable to retire, and pretty much miserable. Our whole society is extremely fragile due to personal debt, business debt, government debt, etc.
New standard for TV? Actually, FOUR new standards for TV? Is this something you need? Can’t enjoy “American Idol” because your 55” TV is only HDTV?? Do you need to rush out and buy the next fancy consumer electronics?
I don’t think society really gets better until people decide to get off this treadmill of chasing shiny objects. But that’s just me.
(NOTE: I no longer own a TV, so I have no idea how good these new things are: I simply don’t care.)
Reaches a point of why bother. Most of can’t tell the difference unless the tV 100 inches across.
I am not worried. The big business content providers are creating GARBAGE. There is no need for me to purchase higher technologies when the programming is worse than dung.
I hope all this settles before my current TV dies. I hate format wars, I always bet wrong.

Except the HDR wars may end this week. The Advanced Standards Television Committee is supposed to “rubber stamp” the final ATSC 3.0 specification for Ultra HD television and will choose between HDR10 and Dolby Vision for the HDR standard. I’d favor HDR10, mostly because it is a true open standard with no license fees per TV set.
I saw my first 4k screen a few years ago and it was stunning. It was, however, several thousand dollars. Given the lack of 4k content it was something to keep an eye out for in the future. Jump forward to sometime in 2014 and I saw a 4k OLED display. This was STUNNING !!!. Between the difference in resolution versus HD and the black blacks of the OLED thecnology it was the finest video image I'd ever seen in my life and comparable to 60 inch prints of medium format film negatives scanned to create 300 megabyte files that were printed with a Lightjet printer. It was also $10,000. Roughly a year later Microcenter had it on sale for $2,000. Again, lack of content as well as the price made me say “Someday”
Last Thanksgiving I broke down and got a 42 inch LG 4k screen for $300. It is serving as my main computer monitor as well as my main TV. It does an OK job of up-converting SD and HD material and, while there is still a relatively limited amount of source material in 4k there is a growing supply on Youtube, enough to keep me happy.
For $300 you do not get a $10,000 picture, but, given the right source material it is closer than one might think. Fireworks in 4k for instance. When looking at the black sky it is washed-out and no match for OLED. When the fireworks start going off you no longer notice it. On the limited 4k content with HDR the image comes very close to what I've seen on OLED screens.
Most of the tv shows I watch are from decades past when 480 resolution was the norm. I simply do not like most shows today. The writing is bad.
I see my 30 year co-workers staring at their cell phone screens watching shows so the high resolution would be meaningless for them.
Where was this warning when it was the 8-track versus cassestte wars, or the VHS or Beta wars, or the cassette versus CD wars or the the CD wars versus Bluray wars or the the CD versus digital music wars or the war on poverty or the war on drugs or The Art of War?
So, naturally I'm in no rush to go to 4K.... especially since there next to no content available in 4K yet on Direct TV.
Maybe in a few years there will be more.
