I think the guy is an opportunist who immediately recognize that he could hit another gambling bet by refusing to deplane. United made a mistake by not offering enough incentive to volunteers.

FWIW, the involutary bump written notificaiton is boilerplate from the Code of Federal Regulations.
14 CFR 250.9 - Written explanation of denied boarding compensation and boarding priorities, and verbal notification of denied boarding compensation.
