I think the guy is an opportunist who immediately recognize that he could hit another gambling bet by refusing to deplane. United made a mistake by not offering enough incentive to volunteers.

United flies opportunists. That they had no tools for dealing with this, and to find out they had seats available and DID NOT NEED the seats suggests they deserve what’s coming.
