A Calgary mom says her autistic son was snack shamed for taking banana bread to school, forced to eat in the hallway while his Grade 1 classmates ate fresh fruits and vegetables.
The mom, whom Postmedia has agreed not to identify over concerns her six-year-old son could be punished, said she recently learned he had been removed from class for the offending snack.
They told me they only allow fresh fruits and vegetables for snack time, she said, noting there are limited foods he will actually eat.
He was told to sit outside of the class to eat his snack. Its not right. Hes being punished by being made to eat by himself.
The mom said her son is on the higher functioning side of the autism spectrum and attends regular classes at a Calgary public school despite his special needs.
But by ostracizing her child from his classmates, she feels its hurting his development and contributing to his growing antipathy toward school thats manifested in recent months.
The mom said last week she met with administrators at the school and was told healthy snacks were part of the schools learning environment.
I was told it was part of the health curriculum or health unit, and he had to eat healthy food, said the mother.
I said (my son) should be in class eating with the other kids. I understand healthy eating, but youre not going to tell me what to feed my child.
According to the Calgary Board of Educations nutrition policy, only healthy food and beverage options are sold or provided in the districts schools, however it doesnt apply to snacks or lunches packed for students by their parents.

I consider pumpkin pie to be eating my veggies. And I’m probably in better shape than most school administrators. I KNOW I’m in better shape than most of the nurses I’ve met.
It isn’t about food. It is about control. Just another tool to control the population.
Well, it may be disgusting precisely because it is healthy.
Do they shame the children of Muslims?
The West embraces Nork culture.
Canada’s laws limits how big settlements can be. Nobody makes millions in lawsuits in Canada.
Homeschool.
Homeschool.

Mom send him to school with Cheetos and Slim Jims.
Watch heads explode. Lets get this party started.
Switch schools, unless they are all under the same doctrine in that district.
In that case, you can either move to another district, Home School or accept the school diet during school hours.
No! Of course it’s not fair to the child or the mother, but if you cannot afford to move, pay for private school or stay home to home school what are the choices in the short term?
If you do a lot of suing, it’s almost guaranteed that the school will retaliate against your child in some petty manner.
This mentality is widespread and as imbedded as a state of deep, mass hypnosis. This is similar to those ‘No Tolerance’ rules about guns, where a child pointing a finger can be suspended. This is the school administrative world we now live in. Any changes will be incremental and will take a long time. Any significant changes may only be possible after this generation of School Boards has retired or been reassigned.
People need to quit being nice and restrained when they get hosed like this and get pissed. The parent is the CUSTOMER of their local education system and they (and people even without kids in school) pay out the ass for what annually ends up being lower standards and school pukes experimenting with their moronic utopia ideas on OPK (other people’s kids).
These administrators need shunning and law suits. They need their dirty laundry researched and aired. No prisoners!
Typical recipe ingredients:
1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus more for preparing the pan
1 cup sugar
3 very ripe bananas, peeled, and mashed with a fork (about 1 cup)
1/2 cup toasted walnut pieces
Care to re-think your comment about how bananas sweeten the bread?
As to the specific situation in Calgary, it’s a mixed bag as to how best to deal with this. IMO, no student, regardless any disability, should be separated from the group for other than legitimate educational purposes. The “healthy eating” program doesn’t meet that criteria. If this happened in the US, I’m quite confident the mother would definitely have a cause of action against the school and it would be on multiple fronts. The school would end up on the short end of the deal.
Oh... this is Canukistan... NM. ;-)
When I was in maybe 3rd grade in a private school (circa 1961), they tried to make me eat the pear Jello. I detest Jello. I was gagging and crying and whatnot. Dug my heels in. My Mom gave them a ration of crap and that stopped that.
This is good news for liberals and others who hate Trump.
They should ASAP move to Canada for to enjoy the blessings of a liberal goverment like Canada.
It’s perfectly disgusting because it tastes like cooked banana ... (I understand that some misguided souls like that flavor).
I prefer pumpkin bread: it’s “healthy” for the same reason banana bread is “healthy”, and it tastes like whatever spices I put in it.
And more importantly, the puffed-up petty tyrants in the school system need to be put in their place. They’re servants, not masters.
Public shaming...an old commie tactic.
Every liberal is a totalitarian thug.
No dunce cap?
I’ve never made pumpkin bread although I make pumpkin pie. Of course, these petty tyrants need to be dragged out in tumbrils. It’ll happen one day...
