Awed by an eight-plane flyover that left the sky streaked with plumes of red, white and blue contrails, thousands paused Thursday in the shadow of the nation's official World War I monument in remembrance of the day a century ago that the U.S. entered the fight.
Melding equal measures of homage to American sacrifice with patriotism, the commemoration "In Sacrifice for Liberty and Peace" amounted to a multimedia time warp to April 6, 1917, when America begrudgingly joined the global conflict that President Woodrow Wilson had sought to avoid through neutrality.
With winds fluttering flags amid temperatures in the upper 40s, a few thousand ticketholders and dozens of foreign ambassadors watched a color guard clad as WWI-era "Doughboys" present the colors. Short films one narrated by Kevin Costner, another by Gary Sinise displayed on twin screens 25 feet tall offered documentary-style flashbacks. Ragtime music, military pomp and recitations of writings of the period filled voids between speeches, many of them by politicians.

One of the stupidest things the USA ever did. Getting involved in WWI. Wilson was the worst President we ever had. And yes I include Obama and Johnson in that evaluation.
God bless our Doughboys and all of our War dead.
A forgotten war for most, at least in America.
My paternal grandfather caught the Spanish Flu while in camp stateside and it nearly killed him.
A maternal great-uncle was in combat and was gassed. Damaged his lungs. He moved from New Orleans to El Paso, in that era many moved to dry climates in the belief that it was easier on those suffering lung disease.
Were you influenced in that belief by Glenn Beck? Just curious.
It was definitely a huge mistake.
My Grandmother died of the Spanish Flu three months after giving birth to my Dad. They lived in southwest Colorado and that flu knew no borders or bounds.
After having studied WWI and the events that led to it and the aftermath of that stupid war, I would have to agree with you. It was an utter waste of human life. Accomplished nothing but put into motion the rise of the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, the holocaust, the cold war....
The war to end all wars was actually the war that started most of the rest of them.
It was just as stupid for Britain as well.
Brexit came a hundred years too late.
1918 Spanish Flu was a human/animal hybrid. These are extremely dangerous and it’s why the CDC gets all excited when Bird Flu or Swine Flu shows up. The potential for mass death is there.
These hybrids kill the young and strong more than the old and weak, by making the immune system go berserk. Cytokine storm I believe it’s called. The real flu is lung disease, your lungs fill with antibodies and can literally drown you. The stronger you are the more at risk.
Colorado is near what is thought to be Ground Zero for the 1918 Flu- Southwest Kansas.
The 3ID is named for its performance in WWI. Irony they fought for a region/village my grandfather lived in and 90 years later to the day I joined 3ID serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
No. Can’t stand Glenn Beck. I came about the opinion by reading quite a bit about the senseless slaughter called WWI. This also led me to learn more about that evil racist vermin, Woodrow Wilson.
That’s interesting information. Thank you.
I think people who died of that flu were buried very soon after they died.
Thank you for your service.
No problem.. Sort of, lol. Just a poetic way in life to thank back what the Rock of the Marne did for the inhabitant of Chateau Thierry.
Philadelphia was hardest hit. So many people died so fast all that local authorities could do is stack them on the nearest sidewalk.
Did they ever determine why Philadelphia was hardest hit?
The war to end all wars was actually the war that started most of the rest of them.
You are absolutely right. Excellent point.
