The author is confusing necrotizing fasciitis caused by bacteria with the necrosis caused by this spider bite. There’s a big difference between spider venom and bacteria, even if the end result looks similar.

Am I mistaken or is it true that everything in Australia is trying to kill people?

No, some kill you without even trying.

I lost it at a 1 to 2 cm body. That's nuke it from orbit size.

No Australia wildlife story is complete without the official tourism theme song:

Come to Australia, you just might get yourself killed

One of my friends here in Tennessee got bitten by a recluse in an inconvenient place putting on his boxers in the morning.

They have a spider that will bite thru a boot. I lost nothing in Australia, so will never go there.

Mama was right. Pick up your clothes and don’t leave the laundry laying around.

We used to have to shake out our shoes due to so many scorpions.

Fiddle back.

I saw one once. Deceptive. Their webs are large and irregular. Worst of all, the initial bite doesn't hurt that much but then the bite blisters and creates a nasty ulcer.

I find a couple of black window nests in our garage every three weeks or so in the summer. I feel bad but I kill them. They nest in walkways and corners where people might brush against their nests. I don't want the family getting bitten.

I tore the large garage door frame apart once when I found one hiding behind the frame. Not good if the little guy fell onto someone as the door opened.

The tell tale sign of a black-widow — lots of dead hard-shelled insects near their webs. They are one of the few spiders that have large and strong enough fangs to penetrate the shells of the insects.

The spiders in the states will leave you alone. They’ll only bite if provoked. Usually if they are in clothing, under a seat in an outhouse, etc.

Not the case with the spiders in Australia.

AMEN TO THAT! Clothes hamper is over the closet door and anything dropped on floor gets tossed into hamper ASAP and unless fabric cannot handle it ... clothes washed in HOT water. I figure 140 degrees should be hot enough to kill any critter that may wander into any of my clothes.

I may be a little neurotic but it beats necrotic any day.
