50 Years of "Star Trek" The original Series - My Sweet 16
Nothing like a lingering Sunday martini brunch... to bring out nostalgia--
And this Sunday my mind goes back 50 years... to watching the oiginal "Star Trek"
And here are my Sweet 16... Best Episodes:
I love the way Kirk and Spock destroy the last of Mudd’s androids.
“she looked like she would hurt me - and I wouldn’t care”
That is a great line.
I read every one of your favorites, waiting, waiting, then
SPOCK: Incredible power. It can’t be a machine as we understand mechanics.
KIRK: Then what is it?
GUARDIAN: (The doughnut pulses bright in time with the words) A question. Since before your sun burned hot in space and before your race was born, I have awaited a question.
KIRK: What are you?
GUARDIAN: I am the Guardian of Forever.
KIRK: Are you machine or being?
GUARDIAN: I am both and neither. I am my own beginning, my own ending.
SPOCK: I see no reason for answers to be couched in riddles.
GUARDIAN: I answer as simply as your level of understanding makes possible.
SPOCK: A time portal, Captain. A gateway to other times and dimensions, if I’m correct.
GUARDIAN: As correct as possible for you. Your science knowledge is obviously primitive.
SPOCK: Really.
KIRK: Annoyed, Spock?
GUARDIAN: Behold. A gateway to your own past, if you wish.
(A camel train passing a pyramid, ancient Rome - images appear inside the doughnut.)
MCCOY: Killers! Killers! I won’t let you get me! I’ll kill you first! I won’t let you get me! Assassins! Murderers! Killers!
(Scott and a guard manage to grab McCoy, and Spock neck-pinches him. An army of lancers charge across the doughnut.)
KIRK: Spock! If that is a doorway back through time, could we somehow take Bones back a day in time, then
SPOCK: Relive the accident. This time be certain that the hypo accident is avoided. Look at the speed with which the centuries are passing, Captain. To step through on precisely the day we wish
KIRK: Guardian. Can you change the speed at which yesterday passes?
GUARDIAN: I was made to offer the past in this manner. I cannot change.
The Gamesters of Triskelion is in my top 2 of all time ST episodes.
I think you need glasses ;-)
There is a definite trend in those selections... ;-)
“The Doomsday Machine” has to be in my top 5, despite the moralizing at the end. I’d probably make it #5, make “A Piece of the Action #4, “I Mudd” #6, “Amok Time” #7 (mostly for how it so “defined” Spock), and move “Shore Leave” down to maybe #8, moving “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” way down. The order gets pretty murky for me after #7 or so, anyway, depending largely on which episodes I’ve seen recently!
FWIW, “Heart of Glory” is probably my favorite TNG episode. I also like the part of “The Defector” where the Romulans think they have the Enterprise & Picard tricked and trapped, but in fact Picard has turned the tables: The subtle “oh, sh**” look on Commander Tomalak’s face (played by the late, great, Andreas Katsulas) as the Klingons decloak, is priceless.
Outstanding post Bendie.
This dropped today, episode 8 of Star Trek Continues.
They have three more episodes coming this year with a two part series final. It will showhow Kirk became an Admiral
“Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”
One of the worst. The only thing I ever got out of that stink burger was a hankering for black and white cookies.
The worst though was “The Way To Eden”. With the space hippies
“Gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy - I got a clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy.”
I hate Alternative Factor. Comleter boredom, others at least had camp
I love martinis, but I hate vermouth. The perfect martini for me is gin with an olive and two or three drops of olive juice.
I thought that I had seen every episode of Star Trek, but it seems that I had not.
Thanks for the ping, Bender2!
opinions vary. I liked “The Way to Eden” tho not one of my favorites.
Now Let That Be Your Last Battlefield struck me as a joke. A bad one at that.
Empath has to be my all time favorite. The show had such clean visual lines, and the empath’s motions were just as clean ballet.
I’ve been making Star Trek fanvids since 1985, and just put them up on YouTube, since the copyright holders can now get ad money on them. My favorite gen Star Trek fanvids are:

Happy 50th! Mary
I hadn’t seen any of the original Star Trek episodes in decades. I was used to the black and white or crappy 480 line color we had when I was a kid.
But when I recently saw an original in high def-—I was amazed! The bridge is still low tech plywood, but the space scenes of the Enterprise circling planets are almost on par with anything today. Beautiful.
I am rewatching the entire series with a new appreciation. Thanks HD TV!!
The ‘Way to Eden’ is considered by most critics and almost all STTOS fans as the prototypically worst of worst 3rd season Star Treks. It ranks along with Spock’s Brain as what happened to the series once the network stucknits nose into the production.
Godawful.
I agree. What’s up with the boob sacks?
Again with the boob sacks!
