All lanes on I-85 are blocked due to heavy black smoke from a massive fire, officials said.

Please! "Smoke of color..."
Happened in the Bay Area as well.
That is not what happened here
The source of fire remains unknown. The bridge collapsed on evidence. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING must be ruled in.
I got my license in 1968 & was so intimidated by driving the expressway through Atlanta, I learned the side roads.
It was much safer then. Parents would warn us to stay away from 10th Street & Tech. Of course we obeyed (wink, wink, nod, nod))
Thanks!
MARTA and downtown Hotels will be busy busy.
Sure we can speculate on anything, but this appears to be a fire. Now what caused the fire, not sure, that they will need to look at, once they get under it!
lot of cable spools underneath that section though...
In Philly in 1996, there was a fire in a tire dump that messed up an overpass on I-95. It was estimated that as many as several hundred thousand tires were stored there, and the operators of the dump were in trouble with the city for code violations. It is said the fire was caused by arson. The damage took something like 6 months to fully repair.
Cost plus millions per day to come in in less than caltrans estimate of 2 mos.
Contractor made many many millions in bonus money.
Stupid question but what the hell, last night I asked if urine would really shield a license plate from spying cameras. :-)
Doesn’t plastic melt? Will a plastic will burn hot enough to cause this damage before reaching a melting point?
It’s going to be miserable for a few months. I already hate driving through Atlanta.
We had major parts of our interstate wiped out by Hurricanes Katrina and Ivan and it took months to get those bridges in order.
If you get cement hot enough, it explodes.
I tried to use some of those cement (made of cement and sand) blocks they use to level trailer homes in a woodstove as a base.
Blew holes through the ceiling.
Concrete is made of sand, limestone dust, and gravel. The less gravel and more limestone dust, the easier it will explode. So, it is possible for it to explode, although I doubt the overpass/bridge exploded.
Local News (WSB) is saying it was PVC piping that was rolled up underneath that section. When it burns, it burns hot and releases toxic fumes. Will know more tomorrow morning I’m sure (I’m not a PVC expert, sure someone knows more than me).
PVC pipe spool storage area. Homeless campground. No reported cause of combustion yet known. Fracture critical structure. Single element risk. As per WSB
Yes, local news had videos of loud booms occurring, that’s when AFD pulled the fighters back, then it collapsed. Hartsfield Jackson Fire crews came and sprayed foam on the area.
