I cannot find reference of an old movie, maybe from 60's or 70's, about a guy driving around with something alien or radioactive in the car's trunk. Think he was thin with sunglasses and smoked. Anyone recall it?

Repoman, 1984, directed by Alex Cox, Produced by Mike Nesmith, starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez, one of the most important soundtracks in cinema history (between that and Decline of Western Civilization introduced a whole generation to LA punk).

Well, there's Driving Miss Daisy, but I think Miss Daisy was a citizen, not an alien.

There was Modern Problems where Chevy Chase was in the convertible behind the truck with radioactive waste.

I was thinking The Monolith Monsters because a guy picks up some black glassy rocks in the desert, puts them into his jeep-like vehicle, and carries them back to town. Then you changed it to "trunk", so probably not.
The Monolith Monsters is one of my favorites from the 50s and worth a watch.

It was the light panel from the jail in-"Return of the Archons" from the early Star Trek series. Later, Spock uses it to escape, shirtless
