ANAHEIM A half-century ago today, Pirates of the Caribbean opened at Disneyland with great fanfare, and Ron Hanford was there.
It lived up to everything, he recalled, now 71 and living in Rancho Cucamonga.
This week, like so so many times over the years, he was back enjoying Disneyland and Pirates...
It was the last attraction overseen by Walt Disney, opening three months after his death. What is now a 15-minute journey in a boat that bobs past fireflies, pirates firing off cannons, drinking pirates and those trying to escape a jail cell with that catchy tune as a backdrop much of the way was originally going to be a walk-through wax museum...

There were two women being chanced by pirates and then a male pirate comes through the door being chased by a fat woman. This passed for humor, as in bring on the pirates, I’m fat and can’t get a man otherwise, even a pirate, unless I chase him.
I had heard that was dropped from the attraction, because pirates chasing women and by extension having their way with them (read raping) is no longer PC. I defer to someone who has been on the ride the last 10 years.
The last time I was on the “Pirates of Caribbean” ride was in 1978.
I believe you’re right about the changes; Disneyland went the PC route in recent years and made some changes to “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
That used to be the first ride I would go on when we went to Disneyland......E tickets were the best. Who here remembers E tickets?
Yes, there were a few pirates chasing pretty girls around in a circle, then you'd get to the chubby girl chasing the skinny pirate. I wonder if that's still part of the ride. I always thought it was funny!
My favorite part of the ride was the dog holding the keys to the jail.
Lost my “Cubs” had there I did back in the early 90’s, no shit. It was given to me by a great gentleman from Paso Robles, CA.
God Bless John “Senior” Obermeyer. He raised 2 great sons as well.
